I used to run a 118 on the drum stems to crush them- big fat snares- and still use a DBX 128 on my Tascam 42. The 117/118/119 used to be dirt cheap on Ebay, but the price has risen quite a bit recently. Some are buying them, gutting the VCA modules and selling them on Ebay.

The problem with the M-5000 was the patchbay. Cards with the jacks mounted plugged into a motherboard. Unreliable and intermittent. I worked on all of the ones in the L.A. area under warranty with that issue. Never heard of the M-7000. Have any pics.?

I would suggest researching if the type of tape used is susceptible to "sticky shed syndrome", and reading about "baking tape". There are some useful threads here, and on Tapeheads.net.

The tape deck will respond to the Es-50/51 transport functions without running setup- but no track arming. I did use the TC gen to Master TC in to test the ES-50/51 with one tape machine when I used to work on them many moons ago.

Not too smart putting something on top of the faders if it's a 388. Those 4 element master faders are NLA.

If you have the "Master" cable, it means you can use the ATR as a Master- but without a slave it would be mostly useless. If you are trying to get a computer to chase the ATR, you don't need the ES-50. except to generate TC You would stripe Ch8 with code and send it to your computer. This is...

The es-50 interface cables come in two configs. Master or Slave, so depending upon your application either you have the right one or wrong one...

One more thing: clean the heads every time you use it, It doesn't take much oxide to screw with the frequency response-pinch roller not so much.

It's hard to tell from the pics if the head is worn.If you run your fingernail top to bottom ,is there a lip or visible slot the width of the tape in the head? If you plar back a previously good track,is it bad now? Are you using a new CR02 tape?
