Another Mix Contest - Finally Here

My monitors have just 8" woofers and I listened to it on the living room system just to find out there was too much bass drum boom in my mix which the monitors hid. Don't know where that came from... Actually I know, so repeat after me: when you're tweaking some EQ and for some reason you don't...

Another Mix Contest - Finally Here

That was a cool song to mix! Really enjoyed it! Here's my version: http://www.box.net/shared/xqdaofhe6s Cheers Tim

    Mix these tracks!

Couldn't resist stealing Greg's cowbell once or twice... So here's my mix: http://www.box.net/shared/ifl3u2fotz Nice playing and tracking, Rami! It was a good excuse to try out the UAD-2 card I received some weeks ago. Had no time to put it to good use until now. There is just some comp and EQ...

    Universal Audio's UAD-2 cards?

That might very well be the case. I fell for it and bought the LA-610 MK II bundled with the UAD-2 Duo card about 10 days ago for about EUR 1,600.00 whereas the card alone is about EUR 900.00 here in Germany. There is an automatic 50$ voucher for plugins included and I thought I'd just upgrade...

    What's your Tascam product?

uhmm... ok. This is getting out of control. Added: ATR-60/2 1/4" IEC half track BR-20 1/4" IEC half track US-2400 24 channel DAW controller (motorized faders, yay!) another ATR-60/16 (always have spares ;)) 58 (seller threw it in on the ATR-60/16 deal) ES-50/51 Synchronizer (same as above)...

If anyone wants to practice their mixing, here you go!

If anyone's still interested, I just found this thread, so here's my go at it: http://www.box.net/shared/o9lg0jc4m0 Oh, and the telephone-style-sound at the beginning of the track is on purpose ;) Cheers Tim

    Another mix contest?

Count me in, too. I'm totally swamped with work right now but I'll try to make some room... Yeah, vacation... those days where you don't work. I almost forgot. That would be nice.

    Greg_L mix contest #2 - Suffragette City

Steenamaroo, thanks for the loop! That was quite educating, at least for me. AMcB, you are totally right. The vocal panning is too much. That's one of the problems I have with my mixes, they're too static. I don't do any automation at all. I mean I even have a nice controller, so I could...

    Greg_L mix contest #2 - Suffragette City

Wow, #2! I didn't expect that to happen! The last time I almost made it into the top 5, so I thought I'd do things different now and it seems to have turned out good. I started from scratch and that was a good thing; used very little compression on single channels and drum bus, no compression...

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for this fun contest and thanks for the feedback, Greg, that's most valuable. It was definitely a great experience for me and even when I'm not in the top five, I'm glad I picked exactly those mixes in my earlier post, who were later to become Greg's/ez's top...

Yeah, the gate on the toms was essential. I have set up a stereo tom-bus, too lazy to set it up for all three tracks ;) ...and ducking the bass to the kick (sidechaining anyone?) helped bring the bass out for me and keep the peak led sane.

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Note to self: try and flip the phase on each and every track just to make sure... ;) Other than that I think I felt just like Rami said: thrilled about mixing someone else's tracks. Cheers Tim

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Hey, my try: Tims Texas Terror Mix Had a lot of fun doing this, thanks Greg! Oh, I sent it through the BR-20 halftrack so it's mixed digital (Reaper), sent to tape and then sampled and converted to mp3. I listened to all the mixes and liked those of pandamonk, Chili, PoeticIntensity (nice...

    Lumpy tape???

Have you tried play-spooling it back to the "bad" reel? I think you won't be able to reproduce the same effect. I've seen these lumps in pictures of an article about storing and handling tape and it was cause by too much or increasing tension when fast spooling the tape. I have not experienced...

    Lumpy tape???

First guess: too much tape tension, so if you spool the tape from one hub to the other the underlying layers of tape kind of "wrinkle" on the take up reel. The tape pack might be wound too tight. Cheers Tim

Could anyone mix this for me?

Guilty as charged, I'm a guitarist ;) ...and still getting acquainted to my monitors. Thanks for your feedback! Cheers Tim

    Tascam ATR60..........advice needed.

Hey Chris, I might have the same problem with my ATR-60/16 although the lifters are strong enough to lift the tape completely from the heads. There's still a mm or two that the lifters could travel if I "help" them along. I'll soon have an ATR-60/2 to compare the lifter operation to the 60/16...
