    Mixers and Home Recording

Such a mixer is very useful if you need its various functions. Without finding the user manual I shall have to guess but you should have inserts for each mic channel to run external effects. Each channel should have at least 3 band EQ and a tunable MID. The monitor section should have PFL, AFL...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

My apologies! i cocked up the first download of that clip (i was fine with "Save Target As" Bloody microsoft!) Yes, the guitar is averaging around -18dBFS and peaking to some -6dBFS. That 60Hz hum is at -40 or so. I cannot find a review of the Samson DI I trust. The various Amazon comments are...

    Mixers and Home Recording

Ah well! See Rob I LURVE making up cables, the more complex the better. I also like designing rigs to test them. I have a CATX 'chase' 2 part test box, less than a score and I intend to make adapters for it for XLR, DINs whatever. Handy for a studio situation because you have a send unit and...

    Mixers and Home Recording

Why buy a 45 yr old mixer with all its ongoing reliability issues when there are scores of modern preamps about with just about any "flavour" you can imagine? I see the Antelope has ADAT ports so you have a choice of I would think over a dozen 8 way pres to start with. From the ultra pure RME...

    Tascam M520 in 2025 ?

Think long and hard friend before acquiring a complex piece of 45 year old electronics. Even if everything works perfectly on it now (which I doubt) you have to face constant upkeep which will be increasingly difficult as the years pass and parts become ever more rare and expensive. If you are...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

But still no guitar! Therefore we do not have a reference level for the hum. BTW are you using the mixer as the interface? That is making a USB recording? If so can I suggest you have a very early, 16 bit zed10? We do. Dave.

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Nice! My son has the exact same mixer and yes, it does have high Z input options, are you using one? He has no problems with a passive Telecaster. You need to check your kit is earthed I think. Dave.

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Do we know the make and model # of the mixer? Some mixers are earth free, my Behringer Xenyx 1202 is one such* The DI box makes the guitar a balanced input. Maybe check the mixer and all the system has a solid connection to mains ground. *But does not have any high Z inputs so not suitable...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Heavy 1" Iron conduit might reduce EMag radiation a bit but I doubt it would make much difference. If the tubes were securely bonded to earth that would kill all electrostatic radiation. Due to that 60Hz spike I am convinced this is due to a transformer somewhere. But! We still don't have a...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Yes, bang off the main breaker(s) and run laptop on battery. The OP's noise has two features that tell a story? Firstly the main (huge!) peak at 60Hz. That can only come from direct mains 'injection' almost certainly 'magnetic' and likely a transformer. Equipment hum will be 120Hz (100Hz EU)...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Ah, when you mentioned "overhead cables" I was thinking 132kV pylons? Yes, run the guitar facing N S E and W. Dave.

    What DAW are you using?

"I can't stand it when companies change their model." Well, strictly speaking they haven't, Borisfx .com have bought them out? A year's subscription is £110 which is what I shall do. The good news is Sam 2025 supports VST3. If you wanted to change DAWs the most cost effective by far is Cockos...

    What DAW are you using?

Hi there! I have used Samplitude for many years and presently have Pro X suite 6 on this laptop along with Pro X2 Silver* which I fire up much more often. I have Pro X suite 3 on an old HP lappy and even SE8 from a magazine freebie years ago! But I am neither musician nor song builder. My son...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

I happen to have a bass, amp and USB mic to hand. The bass peaks to -10ish and the noise eventually drops to a (reasonably?) acceptable -60dBFS ish. Were I to move around the room with the bass I reckon I could better that by 10dB? But I would say, in a song mix that S/N ratio is good enough? Dave.

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

Geeez! That's nasty! I would not be at all surprised if that is due to the overhead lines. I suspect there is also some electro-staic pickup as well judging by the higher harmonics. Do you know the line voltage? But WHERE is the chuffin' guitar? The figures mean Jack unless we can refer them...

Can I stand on a piece of metal to ground myself instead of buying a hum eliminator?

OK here's the MO. Strum guitar to get an average level in the DAW of about -20dBFS in its meters 20secs. Stop playing but keep a hand on the strings to, a) kill the hum and b, silence the strings...20secs Lift hand off strings a gently as you can to keep them quiet...20 secs. N.B. keep level...

    Chinese now doing Telefunken copies

I would expect a high tech Co like Telefunken to have all their CNC data on their servers and we know how good the Chinese are at hacking other people's data! Thus they might just be able to dump the design info straight into their CNC machines and 3D printers? Handbooks would of course be a...

    Switching amps

When we were A/B testing amps we switched a speaker between amps hundreds of times with a simple footswitch, even with them at full chat! Never a problem. Mind you, these, you must be aware were amps of good design and with good quality transformers. Certain other brands might no be so...

What Computer/Hardware to Buy For My Budget And Specific Needs (Which Includes Compatibility With An MP3 Player)

"Reaper has been suggested a lot. My good friend recommended Garage Band because it's so easy to use, especially the more modern versions. I'm wondering just two things. How Much easier is it than Reaper?" You can have both! I am no musician but my son is and he has become very slick with...

What Computer/Hardware to Buy For My Budget And Specific Needs (Which Includes Compatibility With An MP3 Player)

Of course, forgive my ignorance, as you say, I suggest what I know but as a tech I have misgivings about the engineering common sense of a company that drops things like headphone sockets on phones! Also I have never been in the financial position to splash out on something I don't know and...
