    Recording Through a Tape Machine

You'll have to use Repro monitoring. In Sync mode, the tracks which are playing back will come off tape so that you can hear the rest of the song while overdubbing. The tracks which are being recorded, you'll be hearing the original input before it reaches the tape.

can hear previous recording on the new take - Tascam688

I was about to suggest the same. Back in the 70s, Larry Fast had a problem where someone serviced the multtrack and accidentally swapped the erase head connectors. This meant that when he recorded on e.g. track 8, the erase head started to wipe track 16 or something. I suspect this kind of...

Empty 10" Metal Reels v Old Tape on Reels

Ampex 456 between about 1975 and 1995 is almost certain to have gone sticky, and selling these as blanks to some unfortunate sounds like a really bad idea. For that matter, you're likely to have a 'fun' time even wiping the things unless you have a bulk eraser to hand. Scotch 250 I'm not sure...

Syncing reel to reel with DAW?

Well, the 80-8 cannot chase the DAW unless you redesign the capstan motor system, even if it could, the Syncman wouldn't be able to control it. So the DAW will have to follow the tape deck. You need to get the DAW to chase timecode and how that is done depends on the DAW. Many modern DAWs can...

Tascam TSR-8 no signal on one channel

From the original post, it isn't even monitoring input. I wonder if the channel 5 card bay isn't getting power or something.

Tascam TSR-8 no signal on one channel

Did you also make sure that the socket ground is good?

Tascam TSR-8 no signal on one channel

From the description I'd suspect a problem with the channel 5 input socket, or the connection between it an the rest of the deck. Might be an idea to record a signal on all channels on a spare piece of tape and then flip the reels over and play it backwards. See if you get output on channel 5...

    Slugbug - 0xBAADFOOD

For those who are interested, Mr. Millar has dropped a new album: Since I first learned about Slugbug here I figured I'd return the favour.

Faint audio on playback on tascam 38

Yeah, that's a lot harder than I remembered. Just tried this on the TASCAM 32. The cards aren't screwed down once the retaining bar is removed, but they can be very stiff. A trick that just came back to me was to take two wire coathangers or something similar, and hook one into each of the two...

Faint audio on playback on tascam 38

Sounds like a plan. The more details you can give the tech (e.g. whether the fault is on the card or not) the better. Good luck!

Faint audio on playback on tascam 38

A fun trick is to flip the tape over and see what happens. This will reverse the track order, so what you recorded on track 1 will play back on track 8 (backwards). Hence, if Track 3 is playing back OK but not recording, it should now play back what was Track 6 when the tape was the right way...

Help With Reel to Reel Setup

Normally I'd be happy to suggest a basic setup, but the 1508 seems to be an actual recording mixer and I don't have any experience with those. Also the A8 is a 4-input machine (unless it an A8LR) which is likely to complicate the process. For a normal mixer and a normal multitrack, the...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Thanks! I'm not actually using the Otari's sync features at all, it's just outputting timecode on track 24, and the TSR-8 chases it. I've not had any leakage problems from the TASCAM's reference signal either, for that matter. And yes, I've been a little quiet lately, but will be mixing a new...

What replacement LEDs for Tascam M320B mixer VUs?

EDIT: Okay, I misread that as M30. I couldn't find a clean scan of the M320 service manual, so I have no idea what the power system for the lighting is like. If it's like the M30, it'll be 6V AC. This might cause flicker if you replace the lamps with LEDs since LEDs only operate in one...

Old 388 Tapes - What Machine To Use?

Yeah, sadly this is the drawback of those narrowtrack formats. They're nice and cheap, but because they're nonstandard you have a much smaller pool of machines that can play them back. One of the big reasons I upgraded from the MSR-24 to a 2" 24-track is because there's a lot of machines out...

Old 388 Tapes - What Machine To Use?

I don't know of one. Something like the Fostex R8 (or M80) has a similar head configuration, but will play them at double speed and uses Dolby NR instead of DBX. Potentially you could digitize the tapes with the NR turned off and slow them down digitally, but you'd also need to decode the DBX...

A WILD month of home recording hoarding!!!

LPR35 is the modern equivalent of Ampex 457, which is what Fostex recommended in the A8 manual if I remember correctly. I've never tried MDS-36, but I tend to treat ATR as very high output mastering tape, which isn't really what you'd want for a narrow-track machine as it would make the...

A WILD month of home recording hoarding!!!

Welcome! That's a lot like how I started out, though I never really went down the cassette route. The A8 will ideally want RTM SM911 or LPR35, that's the modern equivalent. I don't know the 2340 specifically, but options include: 1. Calibrating it for higher output tape - this can be awkward...

Where do pro studios get their tape...?

My tape shelf actually illustrates the transition from RMG through to RTM, and finally the white/grey packaging they're using at the moment. (Furthest right are old Quantegy tapes). But I would assume the answer to the overall question is "They get their tape from ATR and RTM resellers".
