    Removing Snare Ping

I use an Aphex parametric EQ. Just dial in the exact frequency that's ringing, and then broaded the width of the bell just enough to get rid of the ring, an then back it off just a hair - that way the drum still has a tiny bit of ping - but you won't notice it in the mix, and it will add...

    V-Drum Mat

You could take liquid nails, and glue the tennis balls to the wood, and that thing would probably NEVER come apart. :p LOL Tim

    4 tracking drums

Yeah, the 58 shlould work fine, but the kick really needs o be dead. 58's don't tend to work too well for boomy kick drums - or at least that has been my experience. What you can do is build a "kick drum tunnel" where you take a card table chair or something like that - I use a pair of $12...

    4 tracking drums

Then you need to buy either another MXL 990, or a pair of Condensers to use as overheads. Some people are limited to recording 2 tracks at a time, so they will plug a mixer into their PC and pre-mix the drumkit down to a live stereo pair of tracks.

    Drum census

R8 is the best drum machine out there! I had one until my guitarist borrowed it and then he SOLD it! Jerk.... and he wonders why I won't ever talk to him again. Rep points coming your way for using the greatest drum machine out there. :D Tim

Question for the drummers in the house

For me it's all heel down, any "Deathmetal" type of speeds, and I go into either "Heel-Toe" mode, or I can even do the Derek Roddy style of playing - which is essentially heel-toe, but only your toe is on the pedal, but since there is maximum spring tension on the pedal, you can't play it at the...

    4 tracking drums

Wait, are you recording these onto 4 separate tracks, or is it 4-channels of a mixer, but being mixed down to 2 tracks, or stereo? What are you recording these tracks with? a Computer? a 4-track recorder? what are you using, because that will help. Since you guys are playing this type of...

    Symphonic drums

Have you tried the Taiko drums that are in General Midi? Also, General Midi has Tympani in it that should be usable. So any decent soundcard should have the sound you are looking for. Tim

    Hi-hat purchasing advice

That's very true! Playing on them is actually part of an ongoing "hammering" process. Tim

    hooray for new bass!

The only thing I don't like about G&L's are the headstock shape. I don't know why, but it just kind of annoys me, other than that, I have never seen a "bad" G&L. One of my friends has the very first G&L ever made that is a right handed guitar with a lefthanded neck. It is literally #001. What...

Need mics for live "harsh" trumpet and sax

My vote as well. I recorded a 3 piece brass section using 3 MD421's, and man it was KILLER sounding. I got a few props from some guys on here when i did it because they were totally suprised that we were doing what one called something like "psyhco-klezmer" Hahaha (My brother is way into John...

Keeping Snare Bleed out of Kick Mic

And when you pad the kick mic, the kick isn't going to be as loud in the kick mic either. Tim

Keeping Snare Bleed out of Kick Mic

No you can't. The Pad lowers the whole volume of the mic, it doesn't selectively lower things that are farther away and leave what is up close at the same level. The Pad is just a small "Resistance circuit" - either on the board, on the mic, or in between the board and the mic. Whn you are...

Best condenser mic for my budget?

My vote? The AKG D112. It's a large Diaphragm Dynamic rather than a condenser and can double as a floor tom or bass amp mic in a pinch. Just don't use it on the kick - once you use on on a kick a while, they get "beaten in" and lose their sensitivity. It's also decent on acoustic guitars and...

    SM58 - Why a standard

Because it's been around for a long time and almost indestructable. I watched David Yow of The Jesus Lizard stick one up his ass, and then sing through it. LOL I think I would have let him have that one. :D Personally, I hate the damned things. My favorite vocal mic's are the Sennhiesers...

    John Hardy Preamps!

Mike, I just didn't expect them to be so much because the last time I checked on them they were around $400 at the time- and that's when it hit me - that was almost 20 years ago! So that was a shocker - not so much the price, as it was the actual combination of the last time I...

    John Hardy Preamps!

Holy Moly!! I remember when Jensen sold the M1 and I think it was called the M4 (4 channels in one rack space) and it was around a quarter of what these things go for these days! http://www.mercenary.com/johharmicpre.html I have the Schematics for them somewhere around here...I think...

Solved Behringer B-1 vs Shure SM57

Also, buy a quality cable that converts to 1/8"(3.5mm) No sense in buying that stuff and connecting it to the sound card with a Radio Shack crap-grade cable. You can get this type of cable at http://www.Markertek.com It will probably cost you about $15-$20 for it, but it will be worth it. I...
