    applause by ovation

If the Applause would have come with a piece of rubber maybe it would have made a difference, but it did not come with that luxurious appointment. I remember it would slide down my thigh away from me as I would try to play. I replaced it with a Korean (I think Korean) Fender LaBrea in 1993...

    Pedal Question

There are a few DOD pedals that I like, but their overdrive pedals I have never been a fan of. I owned the American Metal pedal (FX56?) in high school and remember playing a talent show and how absolutely shitty that thing sounded in a big, open environment through my rig, which at that point...

I think my Applause was the 'celebrity' model and was around $200 circa 1985 or so. It was a pos, but seemed great at the time because it: had Ovation as the mother company, though in retrospect it was probably just the same corporate relation by ownership and had nothing to do with quality or...

Can you hear that I don't use a pick when I play?

If you mean the clicky fingernail attack on the plucking hand that's at it's loudest (to me) at around 10-12 seconds on the timer...it's a sharp attack, but I don't think it sounds bad or is very noticeable.

    Crate Power Block for Guitar/Bass....thoughts?

Late to the party, but my bass player had one he was using for awhile. He buys/sells used gear for a living and is always switching his rig around with new stuff. I think the Crate developed some problems on him. He's using something similar from Ampeg now, small and lightweight, and it...

I think you made the right decision.

    Pedal Question

I haven't heard the newer ones (post'80s). The singer in my hs band played rhythm guitar and had one and it sounded good to me. Of course, compared to my DOD Performer series distortion pedal and the distortion in my Peavey Bandit amp at the time, most anything was going to sound great. :)

    New or used?

I buy mostly used stuff and occasionally new stuff. Most of my purchases have been ebay or from music/gear forums through Paypal. I guess I've had good luck so far because I've heard horror stories about both. GC used stuff is good, too (my LP STd. was purchased used there)

    What's the story with Epiphone?

Totally agree. Sorry to RAMI for getting OT, but Muttley what do you think of the Gibson Custom Historic and Art division? Their prices seem pretty far above standard Gibson products, and I believe they have their own facility, but do you think they are really using better materials or are the...

    What's the story with Epiphone?

I would probably guess the same, but at that point you may as well just spend the difference and get the Gibson label and case instead of Epiphone. For resale value, if nothing else.

    What's the story with Epiphone?

Would you say the materials on an Epiphone DOT, generally speaking, are as good as those used on a Gibson ES 335?
  12. Seeker of Rock

    What's the story with Epiphone?

Yep, but it's a cheaper quality of wood than a solid maple top. An Epi is not using the quality of materials that most Gibsons are.

New amp for Greg - Bladow! (lots of pics)

I'm just now seeing this thread. The size of the transformers is obscene. Nice fucking amp, dude!

A Punk Looks at 40 - Greg's birthday song to himself!

The title drew me in here...I thought you were going to punk up the Jimmy Buffett tune. :) Your production skills are damn good, old man. Did you buy yourself any new gear on your birthday?
  15. Seeker of Rock

    What's the story with Epiphone?

Definitely. My Epi Dot is (I believe) laminated maple compressed wood with lesser quality metals than the Gibsons. With more expensive guitars I can definitely tell the difference in quality, and I doubt an Epi LP is going to come close to my LP Std in quality of materials. But I play that...

    Pedal Question

Yes. And generally speaking, I try to avoid DOD OD pedals. I've tried a number of them through the years (and owned a couple) and they just don't sound good to me. The circuitry sounds like it breaks up electronically in a way that it's not supposed to, like the insides are baking in an oven...

    Pedal Question

If I were to describe it, I'd call a tubescreamer a balls-in-your-face-rock-and-fucking-roll pedal. It has that mid boost tone that is one of the best I've heard, especially if your fronting into a naturally overdriven tube channel. From a straight up clean channel, it sounds great but lacks...

    Condenser or dynamic mic?

    This thread rocks. :laughings: :laughings:

+1 here for the Tube Screamer. Greg, great tone on that clip.
