    Recording Band with Orchestra

Wow, thanks a lot Lee for taking the time to write all that! I'll try to answer some of your questions. Budget: For this one, the budget is as low as possible, since the money would be coming out of my pocket, and the few I have I spend it on gear. :p The Decca tree seems like a good...

    Recording Band with Orchestra

Of course it's a lot easier if you live in a third world country (Bolivia) where no one has the slightest idea about audio, and those very few who do change a shitload. Those recordings from the other post, I made them for free, to give them a sample of my work. After hearing that they decided...

    Recording Band with Orchestra

Well, it's not really 24 channels, but 24 inputs. It has 8 mono channels (with mic preamps and direct outputs), 4 stereo chanels (only 2 with mic preamps) and 4 stereo returns. So the real XLR phantom powered, mic preamp´d channels, are only 10. And I'm going to be playing... drums probably. I...

    Recording Band with Orchestra

Hehehe, I'll tell you my secret, but don't tell anyone :p Actually I'm not "affording" it. They aren't charging anything. It's like a favor exchange thing. They are doing this for me and I'm recording them a CD. They aren't a professional orchestra though... It's more like a comunity orchestra...

Better means of isolating the kick drum from the Overhead mics?

If you indeed have individual mikes for snare and toms, move the mikes closer to the cymbals. You could also compress the overheads using the kick mick as a sidechain. It compresses the signal according to the sidechain signal, so when there is a kick played, the OHs will be compressed a lot for...

    Recording Band with Orchestra

Hi guys. Here is the deal. My band is going to have in a couple of months a concert with a 90 piece symphonic orchestra, and I'm working on the sound design for PA and Recording it multitrack for a DVD. I'm going to make two sound designs: An independent: No financing, using most of my...

    Which would you pick?

When I saw the U87, I didn't even have to look at the other options.

How can I make my cymbals decay faster?

Dig a hole in your garden and bury them for a couple of years. When they go out they should be pretty rusty, green, and dampened.

4 track cassette only good for demos, while real records are made on 2" Studer?

Not sure about that... Behringer for example always out-features their rivals. They always have way more features than similar products costing twice. I love behringer, but they are not pros :)

Best Bang for Buck Mic & Recording Laptop budget $1600

WTF? MSH drum pack? Am I missing something, or you just confused the naiant mikes with the Karma Micro? If you are talking about the karma micro, it's also a good suggestion. You get 7 really cheap all porpuse mikes, that you could use for example for toms, and snare, and get a better mike for...

4 track cassette only good for demos, while real records are made on 2" Studer?

Most audio gear should have something like this:

Could you damage a microphone by placing it inside an inflated balloon???

The urban legend is that you can put a nail in your wall with a SM58. SM57 is pretty much the same so you should be fine.

Best Bang for Buck Mic & Recording Laptop budget $1600

Get a standalone recorder. One of those 16 channel workstations. That should leave you a lot of money for mikes. And get the Rode NT5 for overheads, SM57s for snare and toms (maybe one mike every two toms), and the AKG 112 for the kick.

What is the deal with drum mic kits?

Try something like the Shure pack. Not the PG one. The one that is a Beta52, and 3 SM57s (with their drum mounts). You might wanna get an extra SM57 or two if you have many toms. And get a good pair of overheads. Like Shure SM81s, or Rode NT5s.

How can I make my cymbals decay faster?

I have the same ZBT you have, except I got the whole pack (hh, crash, ride and china). The usual is tape. I don't know how it's called in english but it's the tape you use with cables, to aislate one with the other. Check it out here, if you look close enough you can see the tape in the crashes...
