If you are going to record no more than two tracks at the time, USB 1.1 should give you no problems. If you need more than 2 tracks, go to USB 2.0. Your laptop should have that, but confirm with the manual. Also the speed difference from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 is huuuuge, but from USB 2.0 to...

If the preamp has USB interface, you don't need the Firewire interface anymore, you connect it directly through USB to your pc. However if you still would like to connect it to your firewire interface by some weird reason, you could preamp your signal, then go out through the regular XLR output...

Get the Alesis MultiMix Firewire. Not it's on 600$ but a few days ago was on sale on 400$ Still worth taking a look at. You get 16 inputs (8 XLR and 8 TRS) Plus all the AD/DA converters are the same ones from the allmighty HD24 Also, you get an analog mixer :)

I have the M-Audio BX5 and they are awesome in my opinion. However I have heard some engineers saying that the only thing that's worth buying at this price range are the Alesis M1. They are at 175$ in musiciansfriend. I haven't tried them though.

You do if you play metal, like I do :) On metal it's pretty common to close mike everything. Overheads are usually used only as cymbal mikes, instead of providing an overall drum sound, since everything else is close miked. One thing is modding a 50$ MXL, and another is modding a 900$ AKG. If you don't like your 900$ AKG, then probably it isn't the right mike for you.

Alesis makes some great analog mixers with built in interface. You connect your analog mixer through firewire or USB 2.0 to your laptop and voila, you can record all inputs on different tracks. But if you want the USB, get the 2.0, the ones with USB 1.1 has only 2 channels on the interface...
