What drums to buy for recording?

yep, auditioning is the only way to find out what you want. on a separate note, if you're looking for a bigger set and want pro quality, it's well worth saving up for. it took me 2 years of research and stashing money to get my dream set (a starclassic performer which has 6 toms as it...

    mic the snare

absolutely. as soon as rami pointed out why i was wrong, i slapped myself in the head--i knew that. i just got a bit mixed up and ahead of myself. overall, though, i couldn't find that it particularly affected the accuracy of the rest of my post. if it did, please feel free to point that out...

    mic the snare

btw, thanks for correcting the inaccuracy rather than simply saying, "you're wrong."

i feel the onset of a bromance.

    Condenser Microphone Reccomendation

yep, i'm gonna say the m177. its response is remarkably unhyped. plus, it's cheaper than the 179, and for vox a fixed cardioid should be sufficient. i snagged mine for $80 on the sdotd a couple months ago. absolute STEAL at that price for sure.

    mic the snare

i find that the crack comes from the close mic, but plenty would disagree. warmth, punch, and space come from the OHs, imo. or maybe i'm just splitting hairs. :D i'm not sure why you're tracking a snare only, but if that is indeed the case--and ONLY in this instance--i would probably put your...

    Die Tryin' original metal

yeah, bummer dude. with a performance like that, i'd definitely not want to re-track it either. well, you could try to eq some low mids out of the stereo mix and see how badly it affects the rest of the kit. i'd just sweep the hell out of everything and see if you can't clean it up a bit. just...

    Die Tryin' original metal

this is a pretty sweet song, man--me LOVES the prog metal! i'm with rayc on the kick drum--it has a rather unpleasant "splat" or "plop" sound to it. it's pretty weird, because while it has lots of definition, it seems to have a lot of "mud" content. did you compress the kick? it sounds like...

    Cheap, But Quality Double Pedal

oops. mea culpa. i totally misread that post. i thought he was saying that he's really good, and tried out the IC but was looking for something more responsive than the IC!:o sorry homes.

    Show Us Your Pedalboard

hey sailjunkie!!! i noticed you have a pack of DR strings on top of your rig in your first pic. i just put my first set of DRs on my electric just last week and i'm pretty impressed with their sound (aggressive), feel (like butter!), and solid tuning (i've tweaked ONCE after their first tuning...

i've looked at these violins before, as they're among the ones used by the group stratospheerius, and i just have to point out... :D:D:D

    Cheap, But Quality Double Pedal

they aren't as responsive as what? a dw9000? what pedal did you play that you sounded like vitek on, that you're looking to find at the $120 price point? i'm not trying to be combative here, i'm trying to make a point. frankly, if you didn't find the IC responsive, it's a practice/technique...

Okay, So What ARE The Best Shells For The Studio?

i wouldn't read too much into it--maple drums will always be a staple--they absolutely SING live, and it's not like they sound like crap on tape if you know what you're doing. there are more for sale because there are more maple sets around, i'd guess--because they're a staple!!!:D:p i...

hey thanks for dropping by man! i know you're quite the resident guru and i'm definitely taking your advice to heart. i checked out stewmac, and they're right in athens OH where i used to spend a LOT of drunken weekends! is "How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great!" the book you're...

nice! i'm totally unfamiliar w/ tradition, but i'll look into it. as for my alvarez--yeah, i honestly think my guitar was a steal at $240 new. it's pretty remarkably priced. i'm just ready to graduate to THE acoustic--there are very few instrument sounds that i already have a vision in my head...

    Four questions

i actually almost bought a variax, since i already use a podxtlive and thought i'd get a great variety of tones, plus all the extra goodies the pod offers (banjo, sitar, etc). problem is, you're paying for the electronics rather than the actual quality of the guitar. i'm not saying they're made...

    Four questions

yep, i agree w/ you. i really would love to use my pickup switch, and sometimes do, but i always end up re-recording the track using the humbucker b/c i can't stand that buzzing in the background. other than the buzz, i love the sound of them, especially for clean tones--more round and warm for...
