SD mic shootout for Tape Op article

no mxl? it'd be interesting to have a 603 and/or 604 in the shootout. modded, unmodded, whatever. i'd like to see a side-by-side comparison with the others, considering their price point and accolades. nice to see naiant on the list. good luck w/ your article! :)

yep, i failed to mention that, but they really do sound remarkable.

Stick size relative to cymbal thickness?

this all comes down to style of playing, not stick size. some guys like to bash their drums/cymbals like they're trying to win some kind of strongman competition. there's no practical reason for it at all. i play pretty heavy stuff, and have never broken or cracked a cymbal. lots of sawdust on...

Can someone Help me Set up a Studio?

yeah, i'd have to concede that they don't seem expandable like a motu system. but the d3200 (and others i'm sure) offer 12 simultaneously recorded tracks, and 32 played back. plus it has usb data transfer. not sure if you have need of more than that--i know i certainly don't, but i'm just a...

check out the "newbie" section. tons of info there, and any questions you have will get answered by searching/browsing the threads first, and after you get all the info you can that way, then post a thread asking about your specific needs.

    My Best Tune so far

hooray for long song forms!!! i have a 13-minute extravaganza that i'm closing out my new disc with too. :) first, if i had to sum up this song with one word, it'd be "organic." this thing just breathes. the dynamics, the expressiveness of the arrangement and performance--it's moving...

That E-Drum sound..better than the real thing?

yep, i totally get you here. i can understand the space and noise limitations. as far as the sound of the room, though, i filled my small studio with homemade broadband absorbers for far less money than it would've cost to get software and triggers. best studio investment i ever made. oh, and...

Can someone Help me Set up a Studio?

you could go the standalone daw route. i'm still using one (an akai dps12), and i know there are people around here who use tascam 2488s, korg d3200s, boss br1600s and the like. they all have mixers integrated, so they act as a computer, control surface, and mixer all in one box. some people...

What is a good cymbal cleaner?

i'm with rami and drummerboy. why clean them at all? does the vibrant shine make them sound better? the answer is a resounding NO. gimme character. you can keep the visual "appeal."

That E-Drum sound..better than the real thing?

heh. i guess it all depends on what you're after. i'm with you on the "giving up" view. i'm a drummer, so i'm pretty unmovable on this issue. i guess it works for some people, but count me out. i know how to tune my drums, and i saved up a whole lot of money to buy the kit i wanted. i'll be...

    satin vs gloss

heh. funny, b/c my friend gary and i both thought that was pretty likely (that he was full of it). he generally exuded an arrogance that belied his position as a salesman (although he's also the repair/lesson guy). for instance, gary picked up one guitar and the guy said, "why don't you just...

That E-Drum sound..better than the real thing?

tomas hakke (meshuggah drummer) and morgan agren (mats/morgan band, fredrik thordendal's special defects--and the greatest drummer of all time; yeah, i said it) were both involved in the development of BFD, and hakke even used it on 2 meshuggah albums ("I" and "catch 33"). the sound is very...

    $500-$1000 vocal pre

put me down for a grace m101. incredible value. it's like a dmp3 on meth cooked by the dad from malcolm in the middle. (sorry, if you don't watch 'breaking bad' this might not be as humorous as i intended it)

    Four questions

actually, i measured between the bridge/12th and the nut/12th and it looks pretty dead-on to me. then again. how the hell am i gonna see a 40/1000 difference??? anyway, my action is indeed high and i'd be willing to shave down my bridge, but here's another problem--the 14th fret of...

yeah, i think before i do anything i'm gonna take it in to the local repair shop and see what that guy can do with it to get it optimized. i'm certainly not gonna attempt to move the saddle myself.

thanks for stopping by and addressing my various concerns, light. i truly appreciate it. i think i will keep the guitar, as it's fulfilled a current need. i'll be looking at buying an heirloom quality 6-string in the coming years, but for now i think i've made the right decision. i already have...

    Four questions

they got nothing on the pistons as far as thuggery goes. allan iverson plus rasheed wallace equals ONE BIG DOUCHY TEAM. i just love it when wallace runs his mouth. i tell him from the couch, "keep running your mouth douchebag!" he always hears and obeys me, and gets a technical. :D the...

check the link i posted for that particular guitar. the reason the sides and back aren't finished is that theyre HPL, not solid wood. the top is solid spruce, so it has the "urethane" finish.
