    Cheapest pair of not-entirely-worthless speakers/"monitors"

Not w/these speakers (which is partly the point; I'd like some small inexpensive ones in the "studio" and something else, also modest, out in the LR or whatever) and no set number on the budget...I was just curious how low I might be able to go and get away with it. So far the JBLs are my...

Mics for under $100 - that just may work for you.

Not sure why you keep pimping omnis-? Yeah sure they generally have less feedback and distortion, but they also pick up everything from all directions, which often is not desired. An even better one IMO is to never hate OR love a brand, period. Take each product on its own merits. Every time...

    Cheapest pair of not-entirely-worthless speakers/"monitors"

This is about where I'm at now. Nice and might be the ones, but I'm hoping for cheaper. I repeat these do not need to be great. "Decent" should be more than enough. And just a general FYI to all that if you consider the JBLs only "decent"(or worse), you can't help me. Stopped making them in...

    Experiences with mic shields?

? You mean the foam covers you put on a mic?

    Cheapest pair of not-entirely-worthless speakers/"monitors"

Prefer experience talking but will settle for 2d-hand info of people you trust music-wise. I say "not-entirely-worthless" because I know how in love people often get with gear and insist you have to get something pricier/trendier/etc than what is really necessary, esp for a home studio type who...

Can I damage condenser mic by phantom power supply connected over unbalanced XLR cabl

I have no idea what that means but referring to me as a kid was oddly funny and tragic (ie its inaccuracy) at the same time. Also moot! :) And really you highlight my point: I get why things were a mess back when...not now. With all of our advances I'd think we would have one freaking...

Can I damage condenser mic by phantom power supply connected over unbalanced XLR cabl

Judas H. This is way more complicated than it should be. With all our tech we can't standardize things more??

Can I damage condenser mic by phantom power supply connected over unbalanced XLR cabl

Flip side to this: why not just always use balanced cables so you're sure you're fine regardless? Big price diff?

why are my songs so large in file size?

Cool, like you said, whatever works :)

    Monitoring with headphones

Some great points/info here. Thx all.

why are my songs so large in file size?

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you can keep everything in the world out there...just an alternative way for keeping things. Most people don't have near the volume you do (terabytes wow). Sorry if this comes out wrong, but if you'd used a service you're not sure you can trust you'd still have that...

Which Digital Audio Workstation best for newbies?

I don't doubt it has its drawbacks, but it's still the only DAW I've tried that was intuitive and immediately easy to grasp from a beginner perspective. For ex. I can highlight a section of my track(s) with the mouse, just as I would text on this screen, and do effects to just that, or hold it...

why are my songs so large in file size?

Price? What is this price you speak of :) I use google drive (admittedly with a bit of uneasiness...snoopy bastages) - 15GB for free.

Which Digital Audio Workstation best for newbies?

Bears repeating. This DAW is underestimated IMO and light years easier than any other DAW I've ever used. They all could take a few tips from it.

    DIY Panels

Thx for all the info. Side note, what about bass traps? Holy #### you can spend money on these if you want. I don't want. :) And I see stuff like this: Amazon.com: Bass Absorbing Wedge Style Panels - Soundproofing Acoustic Studio Foam - 12"x12"x3" Tiles - 2 Pack - DIY: Musical Instruments...

I am surprised that GB is still pitching the shutout. I thought that was a popular one.

    Monitoring with headphones

Everywhere I read that in the end you should do this with speakers, but headphones can be a useful alternate way to listen. Has anyone ever monitored only with headphones? I'm thinking this is workable with "open" ones. Frankly I'd prefer to avoid the expense of speakers (excuse me, "studio...

    Experiences with mic shields?

Yeah I'm also thinking that if nothing else it will help at least a little in most any situation due to secondary reflections coming from elsewhere. Thinking now that it will be minimal in general singing applications though....be curious to see how it plays out though.

why are my songs so large in file size?

Now that's scary. An advisable backup (or double backup) would be to stash them on google drive or some other "cloud" area.
