    Help with recording

Check out a few other interfaces before you buy from Radio Shack. M-Audio, M-Box, Audio Buddy or something like these units. These are good starter units and include recording software which can keep you going for quite a while. You can try the Radio Shack unit if you like but I would think...

    The all important illusion

This reminds me of an old commercial... Is it live or is it Memorex? Did it sound that good before it was sent to the recorder, or, has it been enhanced in the mixing and editing? Can the average listener tell? Does it really matter as long as the finished product sounds good? I'm all for...

Where do you sling your ax?

I had to vote for the belt buckle location but not for the scratches. Actualy I rest the body on my right hip bone, with the bridge just about right over the bone. I play with about a 30 degree incline toward the headstock. This may not be the coolest looking position, but at my age it's more...

    Lyric/Melody to the Music?

Not an answer, just an observation... A lot of "soul" and "motown" type music rides mostly on the 2-4 beat. Most country is on the 1-3. Blues based rock often falls on the 2-4. Maybe it has something to do with the mood a writer/performer is trying to establish for the song.

    Help with recording

Welcome to the board and welcome to the wacky (and often frustrating) world of home recording. Before going into any details of things you are going to need I suggest you visit the Tweakheadz website and do a little reading about what is available, what it does, and about what it will cost...

Turning my guitar amp into a PA speaker

Stevieb beat me to this idea (and it's a good one.) I have a 150 watt Johnson keyboard amp (found at a pawn shop for $50) which we mainly use as a powered monitor for our drummer, something simillar should work for the purpose you described.

My Experience Is That Tone Controls on Guitars Do Very Little

I find the tone control to be a vital part of electric guitar and normaly hear quite a bit of difference (even on most cheap guitars.) But I play mostly with my amps set to lower gain than many others and rarely use any efx other than a little reverb and compression. I have to admitt that I...

    Power in the studio

If you are familiar with breaker boxes you will notice thea they have 2 sides (right and left) where the wires to the outlets are conected. Ask the electrician to make all the conections going to the studio on the same side. This will help to eliminate a lot of hum you can get by using outlets...

    newb alert... LOL

If your mic cables are 20 feet long or less then the 1/4 cables should be fine. If you need to use longer cables or link 2 or more together you will be better off using XLR cables.

    Mic placement vs. acoustics

By all means you will be better off to learn to use whatever gear you have to get the best results in any recording environment. You can't always control the environment (room) where you are expected to record, but you are in total control of the recording process. Learn what your gear can and...

Question about mixing and matching overheads in a Glyn Johns setup

And, depending on the mic placement and angle, you can also pick up some of the attack from the bass drum with an under snare placement. Keep the pan pretty much in the center for this mic, pan the overheads about 60-70%.

    How's your internal metronome?

I used to think my timing was better than it is. About 8 years ago I got my first programmable keyboard, I started playing along to the rythms and chord patterns and quickly discovered I was not quite as accurate as I had thought on my timing. Playing guitar along with the keyboard rythms has...

running an amp with 2 channels on at once

For what it's worth, I have a Fender Twin "The Twin" model which has inputs for chanel switching or inputs for combining both the clean and drive chanels. I like using the combined chanel input. I usualy set the clean chanel first to get that classic Fender clean tone and volume I desire, then...

    Ibanez or Fender

I don't like to argue but I measured the length on 3 different model Ibanez guitars that I own, all were 24.75" stock necks. I haven't had the chance to compare bass necks.

    Can burlap be painted?

Burlap, like most fabrics can be painted. Would it change the acoustic properties? Probably a little, depending on how thickly you coat the burlap. If you want to go darker (color) burlap can easily be dyed, it can also be bleached to make it lighter but bleaching can weaken the fibers. If...

    Ibanez or Fender

I'm a little biased (I like Ibanez better than Fender) Ibanez guitars have a shorter scale length (basses probably do too) which makes them play a little differently. The used values are likely to be similar so why not let your wife choose which she likes better.

    Guitar through Keyboard Amp

Keyboard amps work quite well with acoustic-electric guitar but most aren't designed to give you the overdrive you probably want for electric guitar. It's hard to suggest an amp without knowing several things, price range, music style, for live or recording, tube or solid state, onboard efx...

    drum kit for home studio

The problem with small kits is most drummers try to tune them too low. Tuning a small kit low will not make it sound like a bigger kit, it just makes them sound dull or lifeless. Small kits have their use and sound great on certain songs. Most of the drummers I've met preferr more of a full...

Is it common for drummers to record to a click track?

This may be an old thread but the original question is still as relative today as it was when first posted. It's an old question but it still gets discussed at practicaly every recording session, so it seems worth keeping it alive. As a guitarist I would rather play along with a "spot on"...
