    what do you folks think?

the dude did NOT ask for any opinion whatsoever on his voice, his playing, his composition or anything else related to the musical element of his recording. he simply asked what mic/pre would work well for this style of tune. hes not asking you people to produce his damn song. so hook, ignore...

    Best Preamp for drums

api overheads. 610s snare and kick. toms could be whatever, hopefully your overheads with the apis can get a good tom sound from there.

    vocal booth design

id say in a room that small a vox booth isnt really neccisary. you getting too much verb somehow in there? get some office deviders and set them around the room if you need to kill somthing. no need to make the small room smaller.

    what do you folks think?

damn whys so many people busting your balls? it says right in your first post its a sloppy take. i think the people here should notice first that your a 17 year old kid whose interested in the art of recording and willing to throw down 500$ to try to make yourself sound better. alot more than...

    Spring Reverb

ive used a masterroom one and an orban one for years. sound great but a bit noisy. i wouldnt bother with the vermona units as there is a billion old units to be had off ebay. mabye they are better but for the price there are a lot of other things

    8-ball by Blue

i have a blue ball and it blows. my buddy has the 8 ball and from what ive heard him record through it, it kinda sucks as well. for the price of those things mxl has a far better line of mics.

    Death Metal Type of voice

id say 58, a foam windscreen cover, compress and verb. you can use an outboard distortion to add a bit of grit to help you out. following the advice of others id say that the fair amount of times ive done metal/hardcore the best gutteral scream takes were best achived not by yelling volume but...

    phantom power 48 volts

i had a prob with a soundcraft 1600 a while back. i kept getting some ugly buzz while tracking. i narrowed it down to condensers and promptly took in the power supply in for a checkup. turns out there was somthing up with the power supply and a resistor somewhere. 25$ later my condensers sounded...

    Kickdrum Mic

my vote is re20. this is a very versatile mic and sounds great on kick. i do alot of drum tones that need a sharp tight tone with a bit of beater impact. re20 is great for this but sometimes it doesnt handle a resonant tone all that well, flatens it out to much. ill switch to a d112 if i need...

    Upgrade input needed

ive never used the great river but my favorite warmth pre amp right now is a UA 610. seems like he has cash so this wont be out of his budget. ive also been hearing great things about the hamptone kits i plan on getting one of those soon and can give personal feedback. also look into tube...

Alright, the Rack, and with m rack gear, 488MKII vs MSR-16 how much difference?

seems to me the 8 track will have a higher noise floor. i used one of those rack mount cassette 8s for a long time and things were often real mushy. upgraded to a otari 1/2" 8 and the sound quality improvement was massive. i think a casette is around 1/8th width so that in itself is a pretty...

    New to Compression...Opinions/Ideas??

a good way of heaing your comps and comparing them while keeping the original track clean is to use the buss inserts. bring a track of vox over to all your busses and insert a diff comp on each bus. you can then listen how all the comps color the original and find the one that sounds best. ill...

    Sm57 Trouble Help

"So he records with a Soundblaster and runs Nuendo? I hope your pirate room-mate wears an eypatch and has a parrot on his shoulder." dont go accusing people of things unjustly. the prog came bundled with somthing else so he still has to use his mainboard. if that werent true he could have that...

    New to Compression...Opinions/Ideas??

ill use comps on my overheads only if i use no tom mics. it can bring out the toms and make the whole kit feel more even. gotta be carefull though, attack and release take some practice to keep the cymbals from pumping. in regards to the bleed... who cares if you get snare/kick/toms ni your oh...

    Sm57 Trouble Help

i dunno how i did it as it was quite a while ago but i used to go straight into a soundblaster card with a 57 and have no probs. i think theres is a mixer section, you could have to turn on the mic input, its prolly default muted. noe that i think about it thats exactly how my roomate records...

do you also rout Preamp-inputs to your patchbay?

if you use a ssnake box for your mics to console just make some of those xlr lines dedicated to mic pres. then put the outs into your bay so you can patch em to any channel on your machine.

    Comparable to RE20?

got my re20 on ebay for around 250 also. good thing about that mic is that its built like a tank. a used one should be fine. things a huge chunk of steel.

Kickdrum mic placement - need advice

id say not to cut ahole in your head. you get get plently of sharp kick sounds if the resonant head is tuned or muted right. what sound are you goin for? you want a clicky sharp sound? try micing the kick head. you want a a deep boomy not so resonant sound? try taking a strip of material and...
