    Newb confusion

Yes, you will need a soundcard. Your motherboard might have a built in sound card, but it will not be enough even for a beginner. Try to avoid SoundBlaster; you might want to consider something like this to start with...

Recording a String Quartet to mix into a song

Maybe this is a good starting point; hope the advice helps: You can sit them in this manner Left to Right which would be the traditional seating arrangement: First Violin Second Violin Cello Viola I would place them in the best sounding room, but that would be hard to determine from the info...

    OK, I'm a wuss. I caved...LA-610 on the way.

I have the Solo 610 in the studio (most of the time) and I use it quite often. Price/Quality it's up amongst the best I've used. That said, for the price of the LA-610 I would've gotten the TL Audio Ivory 5050 and saved over $800. IMHO the TL Audio has awesome Price/Quality. Solo son mis...

    Drum Sound

I'm tracking some drums for a pop/rock album and this is the sound that I'm getting so far... I was just wondering what you people thought of the sound of these drums, the room and mics etc. I can go into detail of mics used, preamps et al but these are the raw tracks with only gate on the kick...

Guitar Modeling Recording. So new. So confused

The Delta 1010LT is a good entry level sound card; it does not accept balanced ins but has 8x8 audio I/O, MIDI and S/PDIF I/O and great drivers. For a little more than the EMU and 1010LT, I would recommend this other piece of gear: http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite/ It has 8x8...

I'm looking for a certain type of effect with vocals...

If it has to sound like whispers, then record whispers. If you re-track close to the mic be careful of the proximity effect or roll some bass off. Like Glen said, I would use no reverb. FWIW, I've done similar things and although this might sound "cool" it might get annoying quite fast. I...

Anybody Own Or Used Tapco Firewire Interface?...

Do you mean this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tapco-Link.FW460-FireWire-Audio-Interface?sku=241525 If that's the case, right off the bat one advantage over the FW solo is 2 preamps instead of just one... Have you given this one any thought...

What Would Be Best For Me?...

Well, The manufacturers of audio/midi interfaces tend to build their better ones for Firewire; some don't even build USB interfaces. M-Audio makes some pretty good gear. As a matter of fact I own some of their gear and have had very few complaints if any. As far as these two pieces of...

    bass sound

Get a guitar amp and an SM 57... split the bass signal and send one to the amp, crank it up and add a little overdrive; the other dry track direct. Look for a spot where the mic sounds good; start 6" from the center of the cone and move to where it sounds good. Mix to taste.

do you really need expensive mics? rawness

Like with many or most things, better quality microphones cost more than poor quality ones. Just to put it in terms you might understand: If you're a great driver you will get from point A to point B driving this...

Interface upgrade (PCI to firewire or USB)

I have a MOTU 8pre and am very happy with the preamps, each channel has a 20dB pad and a 48v phantom switch. For the money I believe it to be the best firewire interface, plus it has ADAT optical ins and outs which is great!

    New to parallel compression

I don't see how a compressor would affect the phase. Your problem might be elsewhere.

    home recording newbie

I started recording with a Tascam 424mkII about 15 years ago and I could record more than one track at once; most portastudios, if not all of them have the ability to do so.

Upgrading to a better firewire interface worth it?

FWIW I just found the article... I'm going to read it again though, I might have missed the point. http://www.3daudioinc.com/3db/showthread.php?t=12836

Upgrading to a better firewire interface worth it?

I forgot who posted it or which forum it was where I read it, I could try and look for it and post the link here... point is, a test was done on a triangle amongst other instruments (because of its harmonics and going over 20kHz) with apogee and soundblaster and couldn't really notice the...

    4 Mics on Drums--Recording Advice?

I think you're on the right track I would do something similar to what russtopher suggested with these variables: I would be using the C01 and Perception 200 as OH's... you could try Glyn Johns method (google it if you're not familiar with it) or recorderman method (ditto). Since you have 2...

Neumann KMS 104/105 vs. AKG C 535 EB

I have a KMS 105 in the studio but haven't heard the C 535 so I guess that I can't really compare it to that. Nonetheless, a few days ago I used it to track some male vocals (with some resemblance to Bono (U2)) and it did an amazing job for that task; much "nicer" than my KSM-32 which is what I...
