Should instrument move to center for the solo/lead part?

Say an instrument is panned to one side for most of the song playing rhythm. If it has a feature lead part over top of the other instruments, should it be moved to center during the solo or stay where it was? (I'm not talking volume, just about panning.)

    tracking a band then.

What he said... I usually try to record drums, bass, guitar, and vocals simultaneously from the start. Drums and bass are the keeper tracks. Guitar and vocals are scratch (or throw-away) tracks. Bass and guitar must be plugged in direct to prevent bleed into the drum mics. Vocals are far enough...

    Rock toms

If you want your drums to sound like Disturbed - Down With The Sickness, you've got to work at it. Here is what I do... For high end stick attack, I usually push up a "very" narrow EQ peak at around 7,000 Hz. You may have to adjust this frequency based on which drum heads you use. I've been...

Could you rate and give feedback of this rock mix??? :)

This mix is coming along nicely. (Keep in mind that not everyone here is listening in an ideal environment. It may sound different to each of them. Myself included.) The only thing that really caught my attention was that the guitars seem louder than the drums. One trick I do is to turn down...

How to stop band from sharing unfinished rough mixes?

Thanks, everyone. Some good ideas here. (Maybe I'll make the rough mixes really, really horrible sounding so the band won't want to let their friends listen.) :D I'll probably end up just giving them excerpts instead of whole songs. That might work too.

Most important mastering tip for beginners

It doesn't matter if he was joking or not. I never read any threads in this forum anyway. ...and I especially would never reply to any of them. :)

How to stop band from sharing unfinished rough mixes?

Every band I have ever recorded has asked for rough mixes to take home overnight for a listen. Even during the tracking stage when nothing has really been mixed, they always want me to dump it to CD. The very next session they are full of comments about what the mix needs. One guy even told me...

"Waiting to Shine" - original blues rock

Great sound. I love it. As I listen, I find it to be rather busy sounding, which is fine. The cymbals are a bit loud which makes it harder to pay attention to the guitar playing. They seem to get in the way of my picking out all of the instruments, (not that I need to...I'm a musician.)...

Komodor Cabbage Rides Again ~ Final mix, with vocals

The vocals are sitting in there nicely. The guitars are a tad bit loud. The panning could be more distinct. It sounds like your drums were recorded in an untreated room, (I can hear the walls.) Other than those minor things, it sounds good. I like it.

    Jenny Jenny cover

Gees, I really need new monitors. It's a struggle to get my mixes to translate on these junk boxes. JennyMix3.mp3 Anyway, let me know where I stand. Thank you.

    Big Hunk of Love

Thank you for listening. I tried to stay true to the music of the era. There was not much kick drum in Elvis' songs. I purposely kept it buried due to the genre, but if others agree that it needs to come up more, I will reconsider. I've gone back and forth on the vocals too. This guy has a...

    A Medley of Fun Oldies

Bigger bass? I can easily fatten it up. Thanks. We're a brand new local band and not very well rehearsed yet. (In fact, some of us never sang before.) This is just a demo to get gigs. We are not selling ourselves as a Motown band. We are a variety rock band, just a couple of white boys. We...

    A Medley of Fun Oldies

This is my new band. We are working on a demo. Not a finished project, just the first test mix. Medley Mix1.mp3 Thanks for any helpful comments.

    Clean it up!

I seriously doubt that can be done without hard EQ, (which will also adversely affect other instruments.) Once sound is mixed, just like with different colored paints, it cannot be unmixed. Separate sounds can no longer be dealt with individually. The guitar is too low in the mixer because it...

Test mix for a rock band demo CD

This is my new band. We are making a demo CD to get gigs. MidnightMix.mp3 This song is really short because it will become part of a medley of other songs. (That's me on drums, BTW. All acoustic.) Has not been mastered. Just a basic mix, squash, and burn. I am looking for comments on the...
