Recording Vocals. Multi-mics for room sound?

Yeah, if you want the room, remove that vocal panel thingy and use an omni condenser. That's the only way to avoid phase issues. Personally, I can't stand room mics on anything. I've tracked my rooms on several occasions, but have always curled up my nose at it during playback. I'll just keep...

Does converting sample rate cause any problems/change in audio quality?

I have an artist in my project studio that originally told me she wants to make youtube videos. So, I set my daw sample rate to 48000 Hz for syncing up her audio with future video. Now that we are some 5 or 6 songs into the project, she has informed me that she wants to make a CD too with what...

    Need feedback please

It's a pretty good mix. The first thing I'll pick on is the hi hats. They tend to dominate the instrumentation when they shouldn't. (I know. I know. They were loud during tracking.) One thing that project studios seem to always neglect to invest in is a good pair of hi hats just for recording...

    Awesome new website - mixbuddy.com

Yes, it's a good idea and possibly a needed service. I don't mean to sound skeptical right out of the gate, but I would have a few concerns about it. For example, I have good mixing skills and a good enough room and monitors to do a semi-professional job of mixing and mastering. As many of us...

I mixed a singer/songwriter today. Looking for critique on mix.

Yes, it sounded pretty crappy. I think that she used her old cheapo starter guitar. She said that her good Martin needed fret work or something due to a buzz. I assumed that I could fix this one up with eq, but that's not turning out to be as easy as I thought because there is a ton of guitar...

I mixed a singer/songwriter today. Looking for critique on mix.

The guitar tracks just don't sound completely natural to me. Maybe too much in the vocal tracks causing phase or eq problems. Maybe it's just not a good sounding guitar. I don't know. Little Jesuses.mp3

Wild Night demo. Tracked last night, Thown together this morning.

I agree on the bass. I initially had the bass lower in the mix and slightly thinner, but the band didn't like it. They complained that it just wasn't coming through when listening on phones and tablets. (Even though it sounded normal on 3 different home stereo systems.) So I ran the mix through...

Mic stand suggestions for heavy mics?

I know this thread is getting a bit old, but maybe this reply will help others with the same problem... I have several of these hanging out around the studio. On-Stage Counterweight - 3lbs CW3 B&H Photo Video They also come in 6 lb. versions. I hang them on the back end of booms for...

    Does this matter? Waveforms................

I believe that background noise in the studio can make a waveform look all squiggly like that. For example, there is a big oil burning furnace (high BTU, forced air,) right next to my studio room. In the dead of winter, if I am recording anything acoustic, I need to wait until that big damn...

    Come on Zildjian. Seriously?

I'm with Greg_L... I don't enjoy things that sound ugly. I guess I'll never understand them being used in music.

    Heil Sound

I recently snapped up a Heil PR-22 just to see for myself. I had read that they are not quite as hyped/harsh sounding in the upper mid-range and highs, (4K to 10K). I wanted to try it out on 3 different female singers, one in the studio and 2 in live bands. Over the last few weeks, I have...

    recording with monitors on

For as long as I've been recording, I can't recall anyone in my studio ever saying anything like this... "So, for this number, we want to have lots of ringy, phasey sounding feedback going on in the background. Can you do that for us?"

    "You can't polish a turd"

This video is basically telling everyone to improve upon their tracking skills. However, once a rookie reaches a high enough skill level, (and has a good enough room and equipment to provide tracks of gold,) he shouldn't need to pay a mix engineer to do his mixes anymore.

    vocals mixing

In my DAW, any track can be set to either single-track mono or twin-track stereo. In stereo mode, the track is comprised of a left channel and a right channel, but remain linked/locked/synced as a pair. Each (linked) channel can get signal from a common single input or from separate inputs.

    Gain Settings Help

Think of gain as not being necessary unless it's really necessary. What I mean is, it should only be turned up far enough to boost the signal level to a usable level for the rest of the system. I typically leave all levels in my recording DAW at full strength or unity. Then while testing the...

Is it better to track a vocal dry or with a little wet effect?

I don't know whether you are adding effects on-the-way-in with hardware or adding it in the recording software, but here is something to consider... It is helpful to properly understand how most DAW software mixers work while recording. I used to think that, (during the recording operation,)...
