Anyone do this? (an EQ question)

I'm just wondering how people approach this scenario. You have a song that has an opening guitar for the first while, then the drums and bass etc come in together. So do you automate your guitar's eq to change when the other instruments come in, or cut the track in two at the point where the...

    Taking a suggestion and looking at multi-pattern LDC's - starting a list

Weird. thought i posted something....turns out it didn't actually work. I'm now thinking a pair of Avantone CK-1's or SP C4's which both have interchangeable capsules and would cover my stereo needs. Then a quality multi pattern. Looks like the AT 4050 might be the right choice, if I wanna...

    Taking a suggestion and looking at multi-pattern LDC's - starting a list

I had recently posted about looking for a pair of SDC's for acoustic guitar recording. It was then suggested that I do away with the matched pair and look at getting 1 SDC and 1 LDC multi-pattern. I've decided on a Avantone CK-1 SDC which has 3 interchangeable capsules and is reviewed quite...

Looking for a stereo recording option for acoustic guitar (mainly)

As in 1 SDC, and one multipattern LDC? do away with the matched pair notion? I currently have a mxl 2001 that has had a U47fet mod which is cardioid or omni, and a SP C1 cardioid. I don't really like either on my acoustic, if I record closely at the 12th fret, it's too boomy, and then too...

Looking for a stereo recording option for acoustic guitar (mainly)

I'm in the market for a matched pair of mics that I'll mainly be using for recording acoustic guitars. I'm trying to decide if I should be looking at a pair of SDC pencil mics with interchangeable capsules, or should I get a matched pair of multi pattern LDC's that would allow me more options...

I Want My Life Back (Advice on getting this to sound better?)

Well since you asked... The first thing that I notice is that the acoustic sounds like it was recorded directly and not miked, which gives it a specific undesirable sound that isn't natural. The next thing would be that the guitar is not tuned optimally, so that can be distracting to the...

"Work it Out" - hard rock hollerin' tune

Sounds very good! I hope you don't mind, but its got a good ol' Van Halen vibe. How did you process the vox? I can definitely hear double tracking, but any other "tricks" thrown in there?

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Well then I'm gonna go ahead and call it a success. I'll definitely remember to go wide with guitars on the full production with the band, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna disappoint them with a less-than-ideal product. I realize that the vocals will be challenging, I'm sure, but I'm...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Gotcha... well I'll keep on doing what I'm doing then. I do kinda see where people are getting the narrow image, but maybe I'll play with it some more....the mix that is.

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

I have the lead guitars all panned, I suppose if I had double tracked the main rhythm guitar, that would have solved the guitar width, but the drums... I have kick/snare centered, and hats slightly panned then the toms are all moderately panned (3 toms only), and I'll have to check, but I'm...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

I use Logic 9. I've seen the "stereo spreader" plug, but it can't be what you're describing, it was gimmicky. But I'll have a look for something else.

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Aside from panning the toms, how can I make the drums wider? Am I missing something that I can implement to make a wider mix?

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Well, I'm happy that it's passed the test. It's my first time with this style, but I got to admit, it's pretty fun. The main chunky guitar is only one track, which is why it doesn't sound very wide. I thought about double tracking it, but opted for a sample delayed, split signal guitar. It's...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Ok, so I've made a quick remix of the clip with the advice that was given. I may be one step ahead, one step behind (in one area), but I'll let your ears be the judge... then again, it might be bang on. Who knows? Heavy Rock Sample remixed

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Thanks, I'll give it a try and see if it makes a difference. In the event that it's not a phase issue, should I just lower all other tracks rather than fighting a losing battle with the snare channel? It just seems to be the way it goes though... I get a good mix, all levels sorted out then...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

I usually carve out the freqs lower than 100hz on bass, mainly the ones I want the kick to occupy but have never HP'd them. Interesting... I'm gonna give it a whirl. Bass has always been my Achilles heel when mixing. Always giving me some kind of rash, for sure. We often don't place...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

I do have a HP filter on the guitars, but I'll check my settings, as it may be only around 100hz. I eq'd the higher freqs of the bass for a more clicky attack which I thought suited the style more, but I wasn't sure if I should let the kick occupy the lows alone or have more bass guitar present...

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

Thanks for the listen, Greg. I'll take your advice on the guitars. Do the drums sound right for this style? Mainly kick? I kinda feel like you might be the goto drum guy for this question. I dig your drum sounds.

Hard Rock sample - does the mix sound right?

I'm about to record a heavy band, which isn't something I've done before, so I quickly came up with a riff and then built on it to create a short audio sample to practice mixing this genre. How does it sound? Any suggestions after hearing the clip? Heavy Rock Sample Thanks, Rhino
