Recording on TSR8 straight into Pro Tools

Unfortunately, with the TSR-8, that's not how it works. The TSR-8 has only one record/playback head, which means that if you're monitoring the signal coming out of the machine during record mode you're not hitting the tape at all. With a three-head deck, you could put the machine into...

Got a couple reel-to-reel recorders the other day...

Gosh, you showed me! Some people still stumble on the simple explanation. I've been asked to explain it numerous times and I think a practical example would be helpful.

Got a couple reel-to-reel recorders the other day...

Not at all :) I've actually been meaning to write a detailed blog article about this topic, would you mind waiting a couple of days while I put it together?

    What's the deal.

I'm really enjoying this thread! I think what I love about this forum is that I've been able to assemble a respectable home studio for recording really challenging and difficult music by interacting with a bunch of really supportive folks. The friendliness here is really pretty refreshing...

Got a couple reel-to-reel recorders the other day...

There's no need to modify the deck itself. I do tape echo using my mixer.

    What's the deal.

Gearslutz posters would have you buy a Porsche when all you really need is a Volkswagen. It's elitism at its worst: You're only as good as the amount you're willing to spend. Bah!

Got a couple reel-to-reel recorders the other day...

If they operate at 3 3/4 ips, they'll be great for tape echo :)

    Tascam 48 + ATR tape question/story

I used ATR on my 48 for a while. The most popular misconception about ATR tape is that you need to set up your deck for a very high operating level. You don't. Mike at ATR says that *most* of his customers run ATR tape at +6. The strange thing about ATR tape and its unique formulation is that...

Several tape formats no longer being sold retail

I'm such a fan of 468 and I really wish that more people would discover it. Since pushing my deck up to 0VU at 355 nW/m, I can run signal really hard into the tape and 468 compresses really gently until it distorts at what I'm guessing is around +6 or +8 VU. I almost never need DBX NR; 468's...

Several tape formats no longer being sold retail

I'm kinda bummed out. I set up my multitrack deck for (PEM/SM)468 and now that I need to buy more tape, I'm finding that nearly all of the online retail outlets for RMGI products aren't carrying 468 any longer. For example, I contacted US Recording Media and they said that 468 never sold well...
