DI Boxes For Live Use: Questions...

Aren't DIs more commonly for converting form HiZ to LoZ in order to allow a HiZ instrument signal to go into the mic input of a desk without overloading it ? I have several DI boxes which also have line level outs as well. Maybe this is where the confusion comes form !

Ok I really want to sort this out as it has been bugging me for ages ! Im running a G5 which interfaces with two MOTU 828s and have an octopre which I want to plug into the 828s via ADAT. Im going to presume that the clock coming out of the BNC word out is the same as whatever the 828 is...

Levels, levels, levels... What are the general rules?

sorry if that didn't come out quite right, bringing your signal up to line level ASAP was exactly what I meant. What I was trying to get at was not using a whole bunch of pres in a chain to bring the signal up a little bit at each gain stage (adding noise at each stage).

burn your tune to a CD (mp3s are converted to wav files) and then re-import it as an MP3. It is a bit lossy but it works !

Levels, levels, levels... What are the general rules?

get your signal as hot as possible as quickly as possible keep the signal chain as short as possible don't use more than one preamp as it will massively boost the noise floor

    wav-mp3 convertor

you could try increasing the bit rate. It will make the file bigger but it will sound better. Their is a free MP3 converter in apples iTunes (amongst others) and you can change the bit rate in the preferences section.
