Yeah, when I record my console's tone to my tape machine it plays back at the same pitch so I'm not in any serious danger...just thought it was a bit curious

My Console is the highest pitch then the test tape then the computer. There is no calibration on the surface of the console, I'm not sure about the interior the manual doesn't mention it anywhere.

So I have a test tape with a 1k tone on it. I also have a 1k tone generator on my console. The problem is they are two different pitches. So I assumed my deck wasn't running at the right speed so I downloaded some test tones and played them from my computer to my board... again two different...

I read a post around here by beck that claimed 499 never had a problem with SSS, ampex or quantegy. Is this true? There are a few reels of ampex 499 listed pretty reasonably on ebay if it's good stuff.

Yeah I managed to snag 3 reels at $35 a piece a few weeks ago which was amazing. Should have bought his whole stock but with SSS I never want to commit to too many used tapes at once.

Looking to buy as many 2" tapes of Quantegy 499 as I can. I am not interested in Ampex 499...too many SSS problems. GP9 would be alright and 996 if you can guarantee it. I've purchased a few reels of 996 that were problematic. My number is 847 366-6253 Thanks, -Barrett

If you have an i5 or a 57 or a 609 or any of the decent affordable options listed above and you're still not satisfied with your snare sound work on tuning or buy a new snare drum (Ludwig LM402 :guitar:) or find a better room to record in.

I know of many great places around here that could fix my machine no problem. I have a developing relationship with an old german tv repair man that I buy tapes and take up reels from. He always takes me to the back of his shop to show me the cool old studers he's working on...I'll have to work...

Just looking for you opinion on something. I just got an A77 for really really cheap...but it needs a lot of work. It powers on and the buttons on the transport seem like they want to work, for instance when I hit play the tape shield lifts and the motors look like they want to start turning...
