What are you playing it through?

I use a Remo EmporerX tuned really tight. As in tuned so you can hear glue cracking. I tune the snare side a bit lower than the batter. Dry, with no real ring at all. And loud.

You know, riding a crash works sometimes too. If you have a light touch, or hit the bell, you can ride the crash to avoid that too consistent sound of your single large ride. Just a thought.
