    blue ball first impressions

I hear it makes a good softball. Seriously, I'd be very suprised that BLUE would release a total piece of garbage. Not all of thier mic's are for everybody's tastes, but if your is as big a piece of trash as it seems to be, there's got to be something wrong with it. Maybe there are some bugs...

    New product idea:

I used to own a few pairs of tube socks. They were quite "warm".

    Vote for mic-pres

    Hard to argue with that.

May be the dumbest question ever.

It probably is possible to do that. If the soundcard has a "mic" input, then there is a mic preamp built-in. It's probably not very good though.

How about one of each if $$$ is truly no consideration?

    Ok, how 'bout this...

I dunno. How about a Brauner VM-1 KHE? I know of people that have used them on drums, though, so maybe it doesn't qualify.

    Best Battle Mic

In a pinch, one of those Earthworks omni's could probably be used as a shiv (or maybe a Behringer ECM8000 if you're on a budget). For sheer bludgeoning power, I'd try a BLUE Bottle or maybe one of those Innertube Audio mag mic's. If you insist on using a dynamic mic, an AKG D112 on the end of...

Or you could just live in Alberta - no PST. :)

I should mention that I havn't really bought anything of note within the last few months, so my comments should be taken in that light. With the U.S. dollar in the toilet now, there are probably some pretty good deals to be had for Canadians. Four months ago, the exchange rate would have made...

This is a myth. The only tax you will be charged coming through the border on the vast majority of recording equipment is GST/PST (which in most provinces is about 15%, so I'm guessing that's what you are referring to). But you will pay that whether you buy it in the U.S. or Canada anyway...

Well, I don't know. Some prices (like on the VTB-1) are way out of line both here and where you are. Maybe some others are too. I don't know the reason for that. On newer items, sometimes they just go with list price. It's always a question of supply and demand. If there is less pressure...

No, most recording gear is zero-rated for NAFTA members and MFN's.

That's the same. I'm sure (no pun intended) that's too high. It's more like $125. I'm pretty sure that's more like $160 (I just asked about that one last weekend, and that's the price that sticks in my head). I think that's about right (way over priced, but that's the exception). The...

No, I'm talking about L&M, Axe and Mothers (the 3 big ones here). I'm just telling you my experience. Except for higher-end stuff, I don't find there to be any savings shopping in the U.S. At least that was the case before the U.S. dollar took a nose-dive. Now there might be some savings...

The name doesn't ring a bell, but I'll definately keep it in mind next time I need a mic checked over or something blown up. :)

Studio Projects Mics - Any Info?

Don't think for a second that it isn't a symbiotic relationship though. People like having access to the manufacturer to answer questions about the product. And the manufacturer uses it's web presence to increase sales. There's nothing wrong with that, but it would be naive the think that SP...

Then you're shopping at the wrong places. Around here (Edmonton) most things are about the same price as in the U.S., when you factor in shipping costs they're generally a bit cheaper and ocassionally things are much cheaper (Senheisser 441's for instance).

A lot of Canadian stores will now match U.S. prices (as long as you factor in shipping). They're starting to realize that they are in a global marketplace and have to compete with american musical, 8th street and places like that. Just bring them a printout from the 8th street (or whatever)...

Mic preamps on Mackie 32x8 vs. Standalones?

I think the general consensus is that they're worse, though I've heard of a few people that like them better. Either way, they'll be workable but far from spectacular.
