What songs are the best to remix for beginners?

you don't really need to know theory, just use your gut feeling, trust yourself, feel the force.... you want well recorded tracks ideally, the worst thing yha can do is start out producing stuff that's badly played out of time and out of tune, unless you just love editing.

Plastering studio walls vs acoustic caulk

that's a cool idea rob, might have to use that to test out my room.

    Old guy moving on?

icon qcon prox is one I've been looking at getting for a while now, can't say for sure how it would work with your mac but it looks like a good unit. I'm still using a frontier alphatrack, works great and is only one fader, you can easily switch between tracks and quickly adjust something.

    totally lost

I'd spend a few hundred at least just on the interface, as for the DAW itself, I'd go with cubase, I'm using version 8 because I'm too tight to upgrade to the latest one, I'm concerned/worried about bugs or it not performing correctly which has happened before with updates, it's something to be...

Plastering studio walls vs acoustic caulk

yes plastering over it will seal it all up properly, but any gaps do need to be sealed before hand, if the first layer is definitely well sealed it shouldn't be a problem.

    Bass drum leak

this is why microphone position is so critical, you have to try and get the phase of the overheads to match that of the kick mic.

    Running a song through analog?

surprised you do not know what they mean... analog adds a certain character, usually through the audio going through transformers, valves and a class A discreet circuits which can transform the sound, it can be very subtle, or quite dramatic, a bit like film on a film camera, the colours are...

    Acoustic Guitar Recording Opinions

it depends on the track, I record a lot of classical guitar, sometimes it just needs more room tone so I move back. I use my line audio cm3 mics, usually in X/Y position, I'm not as keen on ORTF and spaced pairs, sounds too wide for my tastes and not as natural, you loose something in the...

    Warm Enough?

yes the cymbals are way too splashy sounding, it sounds too ambient for my tastes, bring in more of the close mics on the kit, EQ the cymbals to take out that harshness.

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

new mix is much better, I think the lead vox is too quiet in the first dropout though, after the chorus.

    My band's new video single!!!

wow very good indeed, the snare sounds massive, really interesting band and your drumming is amazing, very professional.

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

not keen on the hi hat sound in particular, especially in the quiet bits, sounds a bit exposed to me, vocals too quiet in the verses and too loud in the choruses, some gentle compression might help even the lead vocals out.

    recreational listening?

I also listen though the same speakers to almost everything, a pair of neumann kh120a's, they are ridiculously accurate and neutral, if something sounds bad on them it really is bad.

What is the life of acoustic foam?

when I handle it I've worn a mask and gloves, so it's not a problem.

    Vintage studio, midi, software, macintosh

fair enough, if anything I only feel pain when I think back to the late 80s, I used to spend hours on end reading equipment manuals, you really had to know your stuff when it came to midi and midi sync, I used to have 2 keyboards and a drum machine hooked up to my mac, sometimes it'd take me...

What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

if you use buses you also have the advantage of bouncing that stereo buss as a stem, which is something I usually do near the end, you can then control all the guitars, drums, bass, keys e.t.c on one single fader and for example sidechain the drums to the lead vocals, for me it makes it easier...
