    Mindprint En-Voice MK II

I have the original. I used to think it was the "duck's guts" until I bought a Buzz Audio.... and then a Sebatron. But it's still a decent mid-range pre. I won't be selling it in a hurry. I now use the comp/eq section in it quite a bit, but rarely the pre.

    RME converters vs. Apogee converters

What mic and preamp are you plugging into the Lavrys? Quality mics and pres will ALWAYS give you bigger improvement over converters..... but of course it's best to have it all ;)

    Best Pre with SPDIF out

The AC2 is fantastic value for the money... but it's the EQ, and to a lesser extent the comp, that make it so. The preamp section is deffinately not what you'd call high end, but it's still quite serviceable.

    mics, mics, mics, ahhh!!!!!

Hey... it's revive an old thread week! ;) My favorite combo for acoustic guitar is an LDC (in my case a TLM-103) and a SDC omni (in my case a B&K 4007). YMMV

    hanging mics upside-down

LOL I had a vocalist a while back who sang with her chin almost on her chest, even though the diaphram was almost at eye level when she did it. So I thought I'd try hanging it upside down and slightly above her and told her to sing into the mic..... worked a treat. Her comment whilst listening...

    Best Pre with SPDIF out

Anything Behringer is low-end at the most. They are cheap and you get what you pay for. Fine for learning on and then throwing them away when you've learned enough to realize how bad they are...... which doesn't take long. so again...... "cough" he did say best!

    Companion to ATC-2

I'll second the Sebatron. Fantastic units. Best kept secret in the recording world!

Joe Meek Twin Q or Presonus MP20?

There's an oxymoron for you. (No offence Alan). The term "high end" in my book doesn't really go hand-in-hand with either Joemeek or Presonus. Presonus I've never been a fan of. Plain sounding preamps in noisy units. The new Joemeeks by all reports will probably very happily find their way into...

    Optical Compressors

Mmmmmmmm, this is No.1 on my comp wish list...... I wish I could afford it :( I have their SSA1.1 preamp and it's da bomb!

    Best Pre with SPDIF out

That's true to a point..... BUT A quality signal hitting average converters will yield a better result than an average signal hitting quality converters. Pristine converters CANNOT improve the sound going through them....... "garbage in - garbage out" Upgrade mics and pres FIRST!

    Best Pre with SPDIF out

Yeah man, put all the money into the best pre you can afford..... .... I get decent enough results with good mics and pres going into the DIGI001 converters. And everyone knows they are low-end. Quality mics and pres will boost your sound quality a lot more than converters.

Yeah, you'd better give a budget!

    Digital....Disappointment

Right on! For example, when Mark Opitz recorded AC/DC's "Powerage", each guitarist had about 4 Marshall heads and 8 different speaker boxes to choose from. Mark would spend 2 weeks going through every combination of not only head and box, but also finding which speaker in that box gave him the...

    mxl 990 on kick drum

Yeah, I was just saying the "I" wouldn't do it, but I have plenty of other "better" options. I certainly wasn't saying you can't. And the fact that it's not an LDC like many people think adds to the occasions it's used for applications it's really not suited to. But, of course, experimentation...

    Noone's knocking the concept.

    mxl 990 on kick drum

I went looking for one simply because the shock-mount fits my TLM-103. Then when I found they were so cheap I thought I may as well get a pair. They actually work really well as drum overheads. I've used them live for this too. And also because they were cheap, I pulled one apart. That's when I...

    mxl 990 on kick drum

The guts of the 990 and 991 are basically the same. The 990 is simply a side address SD condenser. Hold it up to the light and have a look. It's a small capsule in a chunky housing. I think the main reason that people have been disappointed with the 990 is that they are trying to use it as a LDC.

    mxl 990 on kick drum

Hmmmm, I don't think I'd be putting a small diaphram condenser in a kick drum...... but I've seen stranger things happen

    Rode NT1 Or Rode NT3?

NT1 'should' be better for vocals. The NT3 is not a large diaphram mic. But if you're getting a VTB-1, then look at the Studio Projects B3 mic.
