robert, i really think don is right...i fought it for a long time...i thought i could get a decent sound with an sm57 for sure...nope, i never could...like i said, swallowed my pride and bought a d112...took about 5 minutes...i smiled for 2 days straight :) :D like don said, rent or maybe...

robert-good points by mrface....another consideration....i'm certainly not as experienced as many on this board. however, in my experience, using anything other than a mic that is capable handling the low frequencies of a kick, it is going to make it difficult to get the sound that you are...

ok...went to gc today and listen to several monitors...i'm more confused than ever i'm glad to say :confused:. i listenend to 4's, 5's, 6's, 8's AND active and passive...they only had one set of passives...i wanted to compare those w/the actives as well since i have a power amp that i could use...

what kit? 'til' don't worry about the mount...as many others have aluded to, stands will get you where you need...and imho, your toms will sound better.

travis-i am not anticipating on working with 'bass heavy' music (ie, hiphop, rap, etc). however, i do want to have the capacity to get a good image of the bass response (i'm a drummer :p ). i guess that is my concern about going with say a 6.5" woofer (wharfedale) as opposed to going with...

EleKtriKaz, i was planning on going by gc and doing just what you did...we just had one that opened the other day...will wait till the 'crowd' dies down a bit and take a few cd's in and do that...will also hit a local store that carries the wharfs. what price range do the tannoy actives fall in?

i guess that really is what i'm asking...do they capture enough bass that i can avoid dealing with a sub?...sounds like the wharfs may be ok for that :confused: notbradsohner, have you used/listened to bx5's, bx8's and the wharfdales?

i know the feeling drummerdude...time is hard to come by for practicing and trying 'new' things...i will have to say that a long time ago i did concentrate quite a bit playing like the fellow you spoke with (ie, the leading w/left hand, etc...mainly to stregthen my weak side!)...i'll have to say...

anders, i played a buddies kit (helped him tune, etc.) not long ago...it was a 8 piece with 6 toms...i was clueless :confused: .... drummerdude...hmmmm, might have to try the pedal swapping sometime...that sounds kind of cool, especially for trying to come up w/a creative/different sounding...

use what you need...no more, no less....i typically play a 4 piece kit too...but last night (because i wanted to bring less to a gig), i played with a snare, kick, hihat and 3 cymbals...worked out pretty good! made it a bit of a challenge to come up with something where tom fills generally...
