How much difference does a quality mic really make?

With that interface I dunno if a better mic is going to do all that much for you. OTOH the Cad mic is a pretty useful mic so you could try a mic pre or a mic processor into the FastTrakUltra. I am getting some respectable results using a DBX Vocal Pro processer but there are lots of choices...

How much difference does a quality mic really make?

Not trying to imply anything it is just that the available technology imparted a certain amount of warmth or a pleasing subtle distortion that contributed to the end result. Can we achieve this with contemporary technology, yes with careful alchemy. I did forget to mention the X factor which...

How much difference does a quality mic really make?

The mic matters but you really have to look at the entire chain as you alluded to, you have to find the right balance to match and compliment your voice. In your cited Sinatra case the result starts with the legendary voice, a wonderful tube ribbon mic, into a tube mic amp and likely a tube...

    M/S Mic Choice Question

This I agree with, while i use a sdc pair for the stereo image, instead of a figure 8 ribbon, the results even with cheapo mics are quite nice.

Sorry, haven't been down the ribbon road yet.

    M/S Mic Choice Question

Ease up there, I googled it and thought to share a well written article.

    Electro Harmonix Ribbon Mic

It is an interesting looking mic but there are many ribbon mics in that price range that have more users. Has it been discontinued?

Bass recording - DI, Sansamp Bass DI

Any preamp will add some character depending on the type where a DI will be more neutral. So much depends on the sound you want to have and how much work or processing you want to do for the mix. Much of my recording is done with a DI so later the signal can be processed as needed, or not since...

Bass recording - DI, Sansamp Bass DI

There are so many ways to record bass that there is no right and wrong but more what works best for you and the music. The Tech 21 SABDDI is a very popular solution and works well but is not my preference. The POD has some pretty good sounds I like the Bassman or Studio Tube models and the...

    Microphone!

Choosing the right mic is more complicated than looking at specs - other considerations include sound source, location and placement techniques.

    New Tascam DP24

The analog control section looks pretty cool. But they still expect users to be satisfied with that tiny screen, why not have a video output. Bad thing just noticed there is no S/Pdif output, that sux- means no 24 bit mastering.

    Tascam 2488 neo pre/post effects

The pre-post you refer to is where the effect is placed before or after the channel/track fader, generally you want the effects pre or before the fader unless you want the effect to be independent of the fader*. *If for instance you only want the delay, modulation or reverb or be able to mix in...

    Get any new pedals lately?

I've had it for a while but recently finished some late nite guitar recording where we used the AdrenaLinn III with very satisfying results. In a couple of cases we recorded a dry trak and used the A3 to re-amp and a few others were recorded straight thru the A3, the compressor and amp models...

How can I save the current song location on the 2448neo?

You can assign point markers that can help you navigate thru a trak. It's covered on page 51 in my 2488/2 manual. You can then name the locations. I use that function to label parts of recordings:intro, verse, chorus...

    Zoom G9

The trick with the Zoom units is to get in there and really tweak stuff, the presets/demos are pretty much worthless on their own but occasionally good starting places.

    Pre-Order Kramer Pacer Vintage

IIRC that's pretty close to the price back in the day, and we're talking 80's dollars too. Shame those are the only finishes available, Kramer was doing some awesome Candy Apple finishes back then comparable to Jackson/Charvel.

Tascam NEO2488 - Any reason to buy a pre-amp? And an EFX Question

The Tascam preamps are fine for most recording but i do prefer to use a tube mic pre for vocals, even my budget choices show some improvement. For quite a while I have been using an ART TPS II dual mic pre which has some nice preset starting points. I will soon be using a DBX Pro Vocal...

Are those mic stand 'vocal booths' any good?

It really all depends on the sound you want, I have some that I made up with pieces of Auralex. I like them for a more intimate sound, for quiet vocalists or for effects like a whisper. I also used them while recording a string quartet to get better separation between instruments.
