    Hey LocusLarsen! re: Rat pedal

LocusLarsen and Toker41 — If I can get y'all outside your argument with each other for a moment (which I'm not entering, btw), I'd just like to say thanks for being interested enough to supply info and even argue over it. :) I'm not saying that pedals don't vary in sound from one line to the...

    Hey LocusLarsen! re: Rat pedal

Very interesting I was surprised at the sound of the guitar. Seems most folks claim that recording direct from the pedal is a sound to be avoided, but "Stundael" has a pretty cool guitar sound. And it's a cool song to boot, dude. :) Thanks for the input.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I'll drink to your name at your next wedding. :D :p :D

    Kerry King -help me understand

Now you've got it right, sir. Mesker has some pretty steep concrete inclines/ramps, so of course James had to go and prove that he's not Tony Hawke. My one chance to see 'em with Cliff, and James had to go and forget to take his uncool pills that morning. Of course he stopped...

    (marty friedman) hanger 18 solo

Re: Re: Re: (marty friedman) hanger 18 solo Sorry to post so late on a side point, but here's the breakdown of the leads: Marty plays both the leads that follow the choruses, the second of which ties into the first lead of the "instrumental half." Dave takes the next lead, and then they simply...

    Kerry King -help me understand

That was the Clash of the Titans tour, dude! Just those four bands, with AIC as a kinda last-minute add-on to avoid the issue of which of the big three would open each night. From what I remember, the big three rotated slots from night to night, allowing each band to be the closer every third...

No kidding? That's too cool! I'll remember that when I drive over there. And thanks for the tip. (Does James know you as Track Rat or by a, uh, less rodentary name? :D )

First post after HOW many years?!?!?

DaveO, the only thing drumwise I would comment on (again, better-trained ears may give you more) is regarding those cymbal crashes where the drums first come in around :23 (and when they repeat later in the song). I don't know what the drummers' term is for the technique, but are you going for...

Thanks for the kind words, bpoco. I try to stay non-technical since I haven't posted my own tunes yet and am still working on figuring out how to really use my gear, but I guess anyone can at least note what was pleasing to the ear. BTW, it's "him." If you scratch your monitor screen and...

    Hey LocusLarsen! re: Rat pedal

LocusLarsen — Thanks for giving up the reasons why you likes it. :D SteveMcB — Hey, if Vernon Reid used it, I'm in! Didn't know that tidbit about "Cult of Personality." msly — Thanks for the input. Glad it resold well for you. On a related note, anyone have any experience with the Rat...

    Kerry King -help me understand

I've only seen Metallica once (Damage Justice tour), and I've gotta say you're right about Kirk. The whole band was rather sloppy, which surprised me considering how tight the music is on their recordings. Slayer, on the other hand, was locked in the one time I saw them. Actually all four of...

    Kerry King -help me understand

Same experience for me, too. Saw them on the Clash of the Titans tour, and the songs were dead up (no pun intended) like the albums, although sometimes even faster. Some of their leads work for me, others don't, but I could probably say that about most guitarists I listen to.

Well, for me it has a lot to do with the fact that the Harlequin is 6 watts. I want tube craziness but without the volume a 50 watt head needs to get it. I'd really probably prefer the Hurricane (Harlequin's big brother), but the price is almost double. Same with the Hellcat — it's beyond my...

    Breathless

Thanks — I enjoy it myself! :D I think fading the rhythm guitar in might be pretty cool, either from the track itself or use a volume swell from the guitar itself. Give it a shot and see what develops!

Hey homeuser, thanks for the link! Sorry to hijack the thread, but that site looks like a winner. :)

    My new band...HEAVY,need outside opinions

Re: a bit off topic... I agree. Probably helps that most of the folks who respond/critique in here don't bash needlessly. If I ever get my act together and post a tune here, I know that I can expect mostly objective help. . . so long as I don't let my ego blow my porch light out. ;)

    Hey LocusLarsen! re: Rat pedal

Thanks for the replies, y'all. Yeah, the Harlequin distortion is pretty sweet, judging by the sound clips at their site. Still, I also have an old Randall head that would benefit from the Rat, I think, and I might be able to make it work with the Harlequin (if I can ever scrape up the dough...

Help to find a bass-distortion pedal

Another option that I used to love is the Electro-Harmonix BassBalls. It's not a straight distortion per se, because it has dynamic filters that give it vowel-like tones depending on how you attack the strings. But you could probably use the distortion mode and tone down the filtering for an...

    Hey LocusLarsen! re: Rat pedal

I see you're a fan of the Rat, and I was wondering what the allure is. My only experience with one was over 10 years ago when our band's lead guitarist had one that he never used, at least not live. I've always had the impression that it was a second-rate pedal, but your endorsement makes me...

Hey, I like interstellar fromage! Okay, first the positives. Love the vocal style, very Gilmour-ish. I like it enough that I, like homeuser, would like to be able to hear it better. I don't know enough yet about effects processing and recording in general, but the compression of the vocal...
