    Songwriting Percentages

So you're asking I don't pay my cowriter at all until I make "real money"?

    Songwriting Percentages

So I'm getting closer and closer to finishing recording my musical, which means I have to start looking at how to split all those pennies that we'll earn on Spotify ;) So my co-writer Alex and I agreed back in 2011 when we first wrote this, that we'd split the songwriting earnings 50/50 evenly...

Davinci Resolve - any users here at HomeRecording.com?

Just saw this thread. I've been using Resolve studio since 2021 (came free with my camera). Love it, although I'm still learning stuff. I just am now starting to get into Fusion and doing all the stuff in there. Currently working on a music video using lots of effects, its coming along nicely.

    mix in mono?

I actually do that for snare drum volume. Sometimes I think the snare will sound clear in stereo, but when I reduce to mono it can get a bit buried, so I'll bump it up a bit, and then when I switch back to stereo it still sounds nice and clear and not too loud.

    mix in mono?

Looks like this is an old thread bump, but I'll contribute. I do most of the heavy mixing in mono, before panning my elements (and I often do tweak the post-stereo mix a ton, but whatevs). This isn't for mono capability, this is just so I can get the mix clean and pristine as possible with...

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

Sweet, this is a good observation and I do agree. I upped the feedback on the delay during this section, upped the gain slightly, and added a slight phaser effect, so hopefully that helps. Don't want to make it too big and prominent, but a bit more oomph isn't a bad thing. Also a friend...

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

Thank you! Your comment, however, just goes to show how subjective this stuff really is. Granted I have three different mixes posted in here, but I had separate people say that the guitars, bass, drums, and vocals all needed to be louder. Which is it? The only thing that no one commented on is...

    No Regrets

I dig this. Not super familiar with production techniques for this genre, but everything sounds clear and distinct and there's no muddiness going on. Nice work!

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

Okay, here's the latest mix. Implemented a few suggestions, and then some of my own changes: Boosted bass drum volume by a couple dB Tamed the 2khz boost I had going on the bass guitar (you could hear lots of string noise, especially when the bass got busy) Slight boost on the right guitar to...

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

Hmmmm, interesting thoughts: Volume is irrelevant at this point. That's going to be dealt with in the mastering phase (I'm getting this professionally mastered), so I'm not going to bother. Just for kicks and giggles when I use a basic mastering/loudness chain, I can get this to -9 LUFS...

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

I always have a fear of mixing drums too loud, since I'm a drummer as a main, it's very easy for me to make them too prominent. I could bring the bass drum up a smidge I think - haven't been out to the studio in awhile since I've been dealing with a breakup, but I might try that.

Nameless Child - work in progress

I agree about the drums. I actually thought the drums sounded great in the beginning when the rimclicks were going on....those sounded nice. Then when the snare came in, it almost sounded like a completely different drumset in a completely different room, the rimclicks sound artificially...

    You Get me Right

Maybe its the vibe you're going for, but I do think the vocals could use a bit more clarity. I know that vocal style doesn't really call for it, but it feels a bit stuff at times. Also, the vocals don't really sound "analog", they sound very modern and precise, especially the backup vocals.

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

Okay, finally got a chance to tweak the mix a little. Ran the vocals through Melodyne a second time, hopefully that resolves the pitch issue (I can definitely hear a difference on a few notes) Turns out I didn't have any compressor on the right guitar, so added one per the suggestion...

And see, that's where you're losing me. Breaking conventions is what art is all about. I mean, how many conventions did Hair break? And now everything about that show is so normalized. Why narrow your focus and gatekeep musical theater? If someone has a different vocal style from the norm, go...

Mykonos (Fleet Foxes cover) - Folk Rock

When talking about the video, in the beginning the strumming of the guitar didn't line up with the audio either.

    Transients

I feel this is kind of a missing a forest for the trees perspective. Kinda like guitar tone chasers who start thinking about the type of cord they use, rather than pickups and amps. "take my recordings to a higher level" is kind of a nebulous, marketing term that doesn't really mean anything...

Started mixing lead single for my rock musical (Musical Theater/Hard Rock/Prog Rock)

You are definitely accurate there. When I wrote this in 2011, I was only familiar with a couple of musicals, and this was largely musically inspired by the original 1970 Jesus Christ Superstar concept album - which is more like a progressive rock album with a thin musical theater veneer. This...
