Straw bales as sound absorption for a homestudio

No, you need heavy mass. That's why heavier grades of rock wool is used. Straw is also highly flammable.

How do I hook everything up?

So much info would require.... A book! Amazon has plenty of good basic recording books and you need to start your engineering education and reference library. Not something you're going to learn in a few posts...

    Can my computer handle 96k?

There are too many variables to give blanket statements about the capabilities of any system. YOU have to experiment and determine what each collection of system parts can do.

It seems someone is an iPad freak

I bought mine so that I could record remotely on my upstairs office daw from my larger downstairs living room space using Teamviewer screen sharing. But I can see myself eventually getting an interface and then just sharing tracks.

    Quality of sound in VSTs

Not just the soundcard, but monitors and treated room, too. A $100 pair of computer speakers in an untreated room will almost always sound bad. Every piece of equipment matters.

    Music creation software for non-musicians?

Audacity is free, and Reaper (using the midi piano roll) is cheap. Either will get you going.

    Studio storage

Look around the second hand office furniture stores. I have a 2-drawer horizontal file that works great .

Problem with new laptop and audio recording from mic/line in port??

Basic rule of thumb: ALL built-in audio sucks for music production. Get yourself a low-latency real asio USB audio interface. Period.
  10. T

    Latency

Latency is purely the interaction of the soundcard hardware and it's drivers to the OS. You -have- to get a better asio soundcard for any daw. (Btw: when I was starting out I could get single-digit latency on my 450mhz PentiumII computer .... With a proper soundcard!)

Audio won't play if VSTs are active

Could also be a plugin in demo or cracked mode that you need to reauthorize properly...

People speak of room acoustics being imporant for MIXING, but what about RECORDING?

Go look at the photos of the big studios in the magazines. They don't spend millions to just look cool....

Which Hard Drive is better for me? (Mac)

You don't need thunderbolt. A 7200rpm drive on FireWire or usb3 can stream well over 100 tracks.

Which Hard Drive is better for me? (Mac)

Never get a 5400rpm drive. Always go with 7200rpm. I have the same exact iMac and I only use Glyph quad-interface (usb2, firewire400/800, eSata) drives (I use firewire800). I got my current 1Tb project drive for $180 at Amazon. Well worth the little extra money for the drive recovery warranty...

Recording keyboard sound patches using MIDI files

Audio out from keyboard to audio in on your interface/soundcard. You can still run midi out of you daw and capture the sound to another track in your computer.

Unable to record audio (what you hear) through Win 8 default recorder

Don't use sound recorder. Download the free Audacity.

A different way to convert MP3s ? (unusual)

Actually it doesn't uncompressed it, it only adds leading zero to the bytes. 123456 Becomes something like 0000000000123456 That does not improve the quality, just adds useless bulk.

    Multitrack recording on a PC?

You have to be careful buying usb mixers; some only send the stereo main outs (2-tracks) to the computer. You have to read the specs and get an interface that send individual channels to the computer.

A different way to convert MP3s ? (unusual)

Yup. MP3 is a lossy format.... 80% of the information is already tossed away (that's how the files get smaller.) What you are doing is making a photocopy of a photocopy of a picture; it only gets worse. Just burn a CD from the original mp3 files.
