388 back up and running - head aligned!

To follow up on a very crooked head. I returned the 388 to the Service Center today, and explained again the head was visually out of alignment, explaining the whacked response across the tracks. 2 hours later, I returned, and tried her out. Same scenario. So they called out the head tech...

    Quantegy to say goodbye...again?

    RCA cables?

I found a score of 6' molded-end gray Switchcraft patch cables 10 to the bag - NEW - cheap - ebay a couple years ago. I thought the deal was so good, I ordered another 10. I've since discovered they're crap - or the wrong impedance or something - noisy little bastards. Horizon instrument...

Who may have 388 parts for sale?

Well, I'm taking the 388 back to the "Service Center" 'bout Tuesday. Kid I talked to on the phone says "sure you can wait - if the heads just out of line, won't take us long to align it! You could go for coffee, and we'd have it done when you get back! (seems they won't allow me in back for...

    Cables: Canare L-4E6S or GS-6 ? or ?

Belden 1800B - I found for as low as 10 cents per foot. http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/index...ROD&ProdID=925 But for the way I jounce cables around my little studio, I think I'm better off staying away from foil shielding. I've found GS-6 as low as 43 cents per foot...

I sent an e-mail to Tascam - reads like this: Hello. I have a Tascam 388, which has been in to one of your Certified Service Centers recently, and I have some questions regarding service completed, and current state of the 388. I called and visited with one of your technicians on the phone...

No sticky shed! Proud to report. The 456 is 2 year old Quantegy. I'll take brand spankin' new 457. And thanks for all the information - I'm sure it'll come to push/shove. I'll leave the 45 long Colt at home  The tech at Tascam was so helpful early this fall when I talked to...

Well, the weather is breaking, and by Monday will be nice. I think I will probably go ahead and contact Tascam directly in the meantime, e-mail them photos of the head work, as well as full description of dealings with the service center. Might be informative, as well as a good record of...

They say they have the maintenance manual. I also have teh operators/maintenance manual - which I'll take in again, like I did last time. I took in a reel of 457. They insisted it should run fine on 456. I currently have a roll of 456 in the machine at the moment (was remixing a recording...

Seems I would have nothing to loose except 8 hours of driving by taking it back in, and giving them the opportunity to make it right. Maybe I can even convince them to have the bench open, and do the work "while I wait". Do you know if the lifters and guides can be rotated? The guides do...

Yes, this is an authorized Tascam facility, but then, they've been 'the' big repair outfit in Portland for'ever', and are "authorized" for nearly everything, or so it seems... I paid with my Paypal card - mid November, and I believe to claim on that, I would have had to claim within 45 days...

Emailed the photo's, with a nice note, to the repair facility who did the work, and received this nice letter. Greetings Joe, Sorry to hear the Tascam 388 is not performing correctly. We do warranty the service (parts & labor) that we provide for 90 days. I show the Tascam was picked up...

Question: What are the "standard" ethics in the electronics repair industry? Would the work done so far be considered under 'misdiagnosis'? Do I have a legal leg to stand on? (as if I had money to hire a lawyer!). Did the fact they called to check before each sending the head for re lap, and...

Thanks for taking the time to look the photos over, Dave. Yes, I'm no tech, but understand the basics, and it looks f*cked up to me, too! That's why I posted those photos. Well, I'll call these guys on their crap work. Dave, do you know whether the #1 track is on the bottom or the top of...

Not sure - I didn't ask, as figured it wouldn't mean anything to me. Charge on reciept is $170 for relap, if that helps. On reciept: " Shipped and relapped head. Replaced Bias Module.(left side only) Calibrated channels. > Note: levels and frequency response good on all channels except channel...

Thanks so much for the input. You guys are about my only salvation! By "Tascam Service", I assume you mean sending it directly to Tascam in (California?). I'm about 45 min drive west of Salem, Oregon. No good techs there. So I checked for Tascam factory Auth Serv Centers. One in Oregon...

Well, I took the 388 in to a reputable repair outfit in Portland this fall for a tune-up, to the tune of $450. First was hopefully an alignment would fix a #1 fading away. Then a call for a head-re-lap. (ouch) - but, OK, if it'll fix the problem. Then a week later, a call that it needed a...
