First studio we are going to build in our life :)

Sorry if I missed this, but is this an existing space or are you building from foundation up?

how does everyone pay for there studio?

By having a real job and not relying on music for a damn penny of income.

    Welcome to the Planet

Thanks Steve. Heck no, my sister falls right into that category of fascinating yet differently abled artist, like Mr. Willis. Yeah, I have cleanup to do, although some of the halting delivery is all her and editing just makes it weirder. Funny you mention lip smacks. I put my Neumann U-89...

    Welcome to the Planet

Thanks guys, for the open minded listen! Joey, you're right it's a little long. I've yet to winnow it down. Squibbs, yeah, that's me on vocals doing my best middle-aged-white-guy-imitates-black-female-singers, an impossible task. I'm thinking of putting out a full length CD of her. Of course...

    Welcome to the Planet

Nobody wants to comment? I understand the reluctance. Backstory: This is my little sister free styling. She's 43 with Down Syndrome and under treatment for scizophrenia. She has absolutely no fear of a mic and just throws down her fascinating ideas that perplex the rest of us. Some might...

    Welcome to the Planet

Here's a rough mix of a song (or perhaps I should call it a "piece") I've been working on: www.toddejones.com/songs/WelcomeToThePlanet.mp3 Before you flame the vocalist, be forewarned, there's quite a backstory there. Anyway, I find this most interesting for the unreal stream of...

    I got a job!

Even though the OP has to pay off his overhead, three hours per week is pretty minimal. If he can't cover that, and then some, he's got more basic problems that paying back his overhead. He should be able to use the 5 months to recruit clients, get some nice education and develop a portfolio...

    Question on Recording Vocals

Then you ARE using a preamp. It's the one built in to the 2480. Probably marginally adequate, but a far cry from some boutiquey API, Neve or John Hardy unit. Find a good Neve clone preamp and you'll get amazing warmth/depth.

    Soundproofing room?

Not to heap on the bad news, but here's my experience: Had a basement studio. it was on the earth side of what's called a "day basement" (aka "walkout basement'). When a band was cranked up, you couldn't hear yourself think inside the house. Outside, a 100 feet away, it was bearable, but...

    Recording Drums

Agreed that player, proper setup and room are three HUGE success factors. The OP's mic selection is not the greatest and presumably the rest of the signal chain is probably similarly weak, but the greatest impact occurs in everything leading up to the microphones being excited by changes in air...

    Soundproofing room?

Yes, fireworks. There is no cheap or easy solution to soundproofing, especially retrofitting an existing space. You really need to consider it during the architectural and build process of a structure.

    8 Channel Preamp?

Seventh Circle Audio preamp kits can provide you with unbelieveable kickassery for about $3K for 8 channels.

    Vote: SM57 vs. Audix I-5

I'd say it's more of blueish-black vs. blackish blue.

Pics of My Studio Conception to Finish

I applaud your efforts, but I am as shocked by your claim of zero transmission through a single pane of glass as your predictions that a single solid core door will eliminate all sound. You are considering leakage from tracking room back into control room, yes?

Acousitc Panels or tiles for a bedroom studio

I concur with Glen. A great alternative to dubiously named "Acoustic Tiles" is to replace them with fabric shrouded OC703 (a type of Owens Corning high density fiberglass). They ship in 2' X 4' X2" sizes, so they should plop right into a typical aluminum grid system for drop ceilings. And...

    Help me improve my setup

I have wooden floors and stucco'ed cinder block walls. It sounds great once you properly treat it with broadband absorption and bass traps. There are few construction materials that don't sound horrific without treatment.

Squeeze a little more moolah and get a Neumann TLM102.

    How to spend money...

I'd up the mic budget a bit, but I think you're on target. I'm thinking Aurora Lynx 8 w 2 API 3124s, that alone is near $8K.
