That Bohnam snare - Halfway There

Thanks funky - that's where I got the pitch for the bottom head. Can't really tell what the tone is on the top head of the snare though. Thanks anyway. Rez

That Bohnam snare - Halfway There

I was tuning the kit yesterday and decided to give the snare that "bohnam" sound. So I tuned the bottom head all the way up to a "G". (392kHz?) This tuning got me VERY close. I'm still working out the tension of the top head (single ply coated), but I know I'm in the ball park. The snare really...

    Which Vocal Mic to get?

I was going to say the same, but mitchar19 asked for a condensor. The SM7 is a dynamic mic. Mitchar19, if you do get an SM7b, make sure your mic pre has enough gain.

Leaving your axe out of it's case

Careful With That Axe, Eugene! hi True- I think you should be fine displaying your axes on the walls. I do agree the finish will fade over time. If hanging from the neck concerns you, then place some support at the bottom to relieve the tension. Maybe you could use the bottom part of a guitar...

    Do Mics Warm Up ?

Lava Lamp Room temperature plays a part here too. One of the reasons many studios have a Lava Lamp. Turn on the tube mic, tube amp, etc. at the same time you turn on the Lava Lamp. When the lava begins to flow your tubes should be about ready. Cheers, Rez

Absolute favorite mic for snare drum

I also say the Sennheiser 441. hands down the BEST snare mic I ever used. Has great rejection. Basically gives you THE sound you want w/o having to process it, gate it, compress it and EQ it to death. At that price, though, it's not the kind of microphone you would want to use on any old...

    Another "recording singer/songwriter thread

Thanks Cus- just curious to hear how others would approach recording in this situation. The vocal mic picks up a decent amount of the natural acoustic sound and I moved the amp far enough away to create space/depth in the mix. Basically using bleed to our advantage. If I had more time I really...

    Another "recording singer/songwriter thread

I know there are a ton of threads on this topic but here's a twist- this artist uses an amp which is a BIG part of his sound. He brought in this tiny little Kustom amp, but I put him through a modded Blues Jr. which was exactly the sound he was going for. Used a gobo between his vocal mic and...

    Which Room for Recording?!

Go upstairs Many acousticians tell me it's best to start with AT LEAST 2,600 cubic feet for recording rooms. Even though your smaller room has higher ceilings, here's the math: 20x20x8= 3,200 12x12x9=1,296 Considering all the other benefits - more space, can close doors, easy load in...

    Best Drum Kit for Recording?

For the type of music you listed, I would suggest getting a thin-shelled Maple kit. However, the "best sounding kit" is still going to depend on the player, how the drums are tuned and the room in which they are being recorded!!!

    Dying to learn...

Have you heard of a product called Reason? http://www.propellerheads.se/ The style of music you described was first produced on a room full of separate hardware devices - step sequencers, drum machines, synths, samplers, etc. - as well as delays, filters, modulators and many other effects...

SM Pro Audio M Patch 2 or Samson C Control?

I bought the SM Pro Audio MPatch2 back in January. As soon as I plugged it in I was amazed how much it degraded the clarity of my mix and smeared the stereo field. I was very disappointed. Never got a chance to return it before the 30-day return policy ran out. So I'm stuck with it - brand...

How much for a used JC-120

Good question. For starters, the JC 120s are incredibly reliable, completely consistent in sound, and there's enough power to be heard in a band situation. Never had a problem, ever... and believe me, this amp saw a lot of combat. I mainly began using a JC 120 for acoustic/electrics back in the...

    Renting out a snare drum?

Thanks guys. I figured $25-35 is a fair amount to charge. I hear what the rest of you are saying about just lending the snare. Although there are many friends I would lend gear to, in this situation it's better to charge a small amount. they know I'm a struggling artist too, and it's like...

How much for a used JC-120

How much would you expect to pay for a used JC-120? It's an older model (maybe 80s or early 90s?) and is in great condition. It sounds better and seems better built than the new ones for some reason. So how much is it worth in US dollars? Tnx, Rez

    Renting out a snare drum?

How much would you charge if somebody wanted to rent your snare drum for a gig? The snare in question is a Yamaha Absolute Custom Maple snare and it would cost around $300 to replace if something happened to it. How much would you charge for a day? How much for a week? Thanks, Rez
