    Good practice/live performance amp

makes sense to me, based on how little I know about how amps work :D

    Fakebuckers

well, sure, i don't throw mine away. they can always go into a guitar i'm selling ;) I only meant figuratively. Since your guitar is so cheap and cheaply made, you could look out for used GFS pickups - study their available lines, have a few models in mind and when a deal presents itself - make...

    Good practice/live performance amp

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound harsh, but... see my new user title :D

    Fakebuckers

well, how good is the wood/fretwork? if the guitar plays well and sounds good unplugged, it might deserve a good pickup, even if it costs more than the guitar. think "final product". yep, great choice. but you might also consider retrotrons for that, depending on what sound you're going for...

Cheap Fretless Bass: Defret old Ibanez or buy Mexican Jazz

LOL, isn't it easier to memorize the words? I guess it depends on the person. I'm more of a word memorizer. Other people I play with are more of a musician :p (but they mess up lyrics). :D

    Fakebuckers

LOL, I don't even see a "coil". where's the bobbin? it looks so bad that why would you even ask technical questions about it? :D your only question should be: trash or recycling bin? or maybe keep the magnets for some other purpose :D stock pickups = throwaway placeholders, like stock strings...

    Good practice/live performance amp

Fender Super Champ XD IS a hybrid amp, just "reverse" hybrid (the better design). It DOES have a solid-state preamp on both channels (the clean channel is closest to Voicing #4). The single 12ax7 is NOT a preamp tube - half of it is a 2nd gain stage (fed by the preamp), the other half - a phase...

    Good practice/live performance amp

wow, if you can afford the Vox... I haven't played them, but who am I to talk you out of it? I know I like the tones that Brian May and the Beatles were getting :) I guess, if you compared them both, you should decide if that speaker is worth the $350 difference? (wow!) with that kinda cash...

Fender Super Champ XD- Opinions, Please

I love mine. I posted detailed reviews around here and other forums and at Harmony Central. I usually don't waste time sharing my opinions on gear, unless I really like it. I do go out of my way to recommend the SCXD. It has quite a following by now. And you don't have to pay the $299 - just...

    Good practice/live performance amp

i think this was postulated (or theorized) before such "correct hybrid" amps became popular. I remember reading an opinion at a "tube tone" site, where the author states just that: a tube poweramp with solid-state preamp can sound good (unlike vise-versa). I can understand that many "heavy"...

New speaker for my super champ XD?

SCXD's speaker-out is rated for 8/16 ohm. From what I read a 4ohm would only be an option with some component mods (transformer?). i don't think elenore is looking to do major modding. you won't need much more loudness than you get with the Cajun. Just mic for larger venues.

    Good practice/live performance amp

dude, i told you, i was JUST like you, I was saying the same thing. The guy to whom I was saying that (and I was like: "can anything digital really sound good"?), well, the guy was patient enough to explain that he himself was kind of a fender amp tube junkie and that the way SCXD is designed...

New speaker for my super champ XD?

the way it was explained to me a tube swap won't be very noticeable in the SCXD because of how it's designed. Especially not the 12ax7, because it's not a preamp tube in the SCXD. I still wanted to try it and ordered a Tung-Sol 12ax7. It hardly changed anything - there was an ever so subtle...

New speaker for my super champ XD?

I went with a Jensen p10r alnico, which is only very slightly louder than the stock, but it sounds noticeably sweeter. since you like distortion, from what i've read, sounds like you'll like the Cajun best. question is also: how much do you wanna spend? i would imagine that celestion has some...

    Good practice/live performance amp

I know, I felt the exact same way - even got into an argument with a guy who was recommending SCXD. The guy turned out to have like 40-some years of experience in electrical engineering AND guitar/amp tone. Then I tried the SCXD. Listen, it's not a solid-state amp. It's an amp with a digital...

Cheap Fretless Bass: Defret old Ibanez or buy Mexican Jazz

+1 for Rondo (SX basses). I had 2 MIM Fender Jazzes (fretted and fretless) and I recently ordered an SX bass from Rondo (fretted) as gift. It was as good or better quality than the MIM's. We also went to Sam Ash and picked up a MIA P-Bass and again, a feeling of vindication (for saving the...

    Grounding Issue

You would solder the shielding part to the ground (back of pot). The same goes for grounding solid-body guitars - it's not just lining the cavity with foil, but also grounding the foil. I don't know what's effective on hollowbodies, but I'd imagine the most important thing would be pickup...

    ES335 Pot Replacement

i just had to install new pickups and switch/jack into a hollowbody archtop. yes, strings (or threads/twine) are the way to go (probably impossible without them). If you find that your strings are tangled and you can't pull all the knobs back without being in the way of each other, cut the...

strong spray-paint that will not rub off of a polyurethane finish?

you mean repoly after spraying orange? i'm not sure i can find a matching orange spraypaint. plus, this orange finish is translucent, it shows the woodgrain (spruce, like on flattop acoustics). I'm wondering what kind of paint I could use.

strong spray-paint that will not rub off of a polyurethane finish?

I recently bought a b-stock inexpensive archtop, which had a small chip/dent on the top near the edge. It's discolored, but it was then re-finished without restoring the color, so it's smooth to the touch, but looks like a chip, about a quarter-size or less. I am thinking of a cheap way to hide...
