It indeed totally depends on the recording. If enough mics/tracks are available just mic it and decide in the mix wether you might need it or not. I personally use the close mic for the ride a lot.

I'm usually using 2 or 3 mics on the kick. One b52 inside the shell, one b52 just in of a couple of inches from the soundwhole (? is that correct english?) and a RE20 about 7 inches in front of the kick. combining them results in a strong dry kick and at the same time that lovely hearing of the...

Does it have to be a mixing board? I think if you loose all the unnecessary knobs and just by outboard pre amps you'll be better of. a 1000 dollar of seperate preamps is ofcourse better than a 1000 dollar mixing desk.

I'm using it also just for recording/editing...mixing is done by a very tasty analogue console.

Balanced is for more reasons preferabbly...-10 versus +4 level if put into the wright holes. And the lenght of the cable does matter...but the location of the cable is also very important. Short cables can pick up noise too if put in the wrong location.
