    computer expert needed!

The big question is.... beep or no beep? If you have the little speaker in your case hooked up properly then you should hear either a singal beep or series of error beeps to indicate a problem. If everything powers up okay, but the system never posts, ie no beeps, Then you either you have a bad...

    bass drum microphone

D112 - studio standard, but not necessarily the best ATM25 - not the pro25. Best deal in kick drum mics. Lots of great reviews. Audix D6 - New mic on the scene. Outstanding reviews. It will always sound good, but it is more limited in the range of sounds it can get. Easy mic to just throw up...

help me pick out a goodly snare

Ludwig makes great snares for recording. I don't know why, but for rock I'll always pick a metal shell ludwig over almost anything else. Acrolites are cool for cheap, super sensitive series and black beautys are just awesome.

    U195--->Sytek/737/ME1NV

I've heard it mentioned over at gearslutz that the u195 and the Me1nv don't pair up well on a lot of sources, which is kind of wierd because they are probably the two most recomended high end mics and pre-amps around right now. You think there would be more people using them together.

    monitors and pre-amps.

I'm upgrading from my crappy roland powered monitors to either some passive yorkvilles or event 20/20s. The reason I decided to switch to a passive setup is because I got a great deal on a hafler power amp and pre-amp, and I also thought it would be cool to be able to switch between several...

Two worse mics or one better mic?

For only $300 you can get an mxl v67g and a stereo pair of mxl 603s. Most people on these boards feel that in this price range the mxl v67g and 603 are much better values and, in general, will sound better. AKG makes some great microphones, but the c1000s and 3000b are not well liked by many...

    Sequence of Mixing Reverb Question

Is it a celeron processor? A 2.4 ghz pentium with a gig of ram should have no problems running 20 tracks and some plugins. However, reverb does use up a lot of power.

    Recording cab

I second the avatar cabs. Best deal in quality speaker cabs right now. Fully customized 2x12 cab, high quality construction for $350. How can you beat that?

audio recorded using MPX550 or Kurz. Rumour???

The rumor is all the rage on the forums these days. A lot of very respectable people have made some very glowing remarks on the unit. It's definitely near the top of my wish list.

    how to record bass

You really can't go wrong running bass direct. It's like the sm57, it will rarely sound amazing, but it will always get the job done. Micing up a good bass amplifier and mixing it with the DI signal can be the road to a really great bass recording, but it also adds a lot of variables that can...

MXL 990 - What do you think?

It's actually fairly common to use an LCD as a kick mic, but SEVERAL FEET OUTSIDE OF THE DRUM. You can actually get a nice organic kick sound with plenty of low end using an LCD. You just wouldn't use it the same way as a dynamic. If you put it right up against the batter or in front of sound...

    The standared for buget monitars....

Yamaha ns10s are also widely known for sounding like absolute crap, but a lot of famous producers use them because it is what they learned on back when they were the only affordable monitors available. Now everybody thinks they are great cause they see all these big named producers and engineers...

Ok, am I nuts? A preamp Question

Well, for 500 hundred bucks you can either get a really crappy tube pre like an ART with digital outs that you don't really need, or you can get a pretty damn good solid state pre, the FMR RNP. You can forget about decent integrated eq and compression at this price range. You are better off just...

    mixer or preamp needed

Good luck finding a useable mixer under 100 bucks, a mixer with decent compression for under $100 is just dreaming. Hell, it's even hard to find a stand alone preamp that's worth a crap under 100 bucks. This is the absolute cheapest setup that I could possibly recommend: M-audio audiobuddy -...

    which software to use?

This sounds like either a mistake on the user end or a problem with routing through your soundcard. As far as I remember my brief experience with Cool edit pro, you can definitely monitor the track you are recording in real time. This would be a serious drawback to the program if you couldn't.

    Preamp question

A decent preamp would definitely be a step up from your samson mixer, but an ART tube pre is not a decent pre amp. The ART tube pre is a piece of crap. I would look at the m-audio dmp3, studio projects vtb1, or rane msb1 as a noticable step up from a cheap mixer.

sorry for posting this question yet again, but advice is greatly appreciated

I'd recomend to get you started: -Asus or Intel Board -Pentium or Athlon Processor (I'm partial to pentium myself) -1 Gb Any brand name memory (I use Kingston) -Any cheap AGP video card (I don't recommend using integrated ones because they sometimes eat up system resources) -I highly recommend...

Music software with shortest learning curve?

I've never used guitar tracks, but from my experience I'd have to recomend n-track as well. Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition is a very close second though.

    Close Miking Vocals

If you don't want to pick up room sounds, and you don't want a mic that ovrloads or sounds boomy when you get close to it, then I think you should stay away from condensors all together. This is why you would almost never see a singer using a condensor in a live situation. Try a nice dynamic...
