    What's your CPU ?

I'm running a Q6700 with 4GB RAM on WinXP. I haven't maxed it out yet, but I have been recording 16 mics at 96kHz/24bit while playing back 4 other tracks and haven't gagged it yet. When I built the box, I roamed the PreSonus forums (FireStudio 2626 and DigiMax FS are my audio...

New Guns n Roses = Does it sound really pre tooled to you?

I have only heard the title track, but I know that the opening riff seemed to suck the air out of my ears, for lack of a better description. Sounded really over processed and just out of place for GNR. I did find it amusing when later in the tune there where little Slash style guitar fills...

    Midi latency

I have a similar issue. I am using Toontracks EZ Drummer with a Korg nanoPad USB controller. It's not my main studio computer, just my screw around at home to build ideas computer, so I came up with a cheesy fix. When ever I "record" drum tracks with the nanoPad, I mute the track so that I...

    Presonus or MOTU?

PreSonus... I run a PreSonus FireStudio 2626 and DigiMax FS with the optional Monitor Station Remote (MSR). I can't speak to MOTU, RME, or any others, I went right from a Roland VS-2400 to these and haven't used any of the other interfaces. I know that the Dice-II chipset caused a lot of...

    computer upgrades

RAM, processor, hell maybe even the whole box depending on what you are trying to record. What are you running now and how much data are you trying to push through it? -Wes

    Improving effects performance

ReaMote Reaper has a function, I believe it's called ReaMote, that allows you to run effects on a different, networked computer. It's one of the install options. Basically you set up a network with two computers with crossover cable, with both machines running ReaMote and both having a copy...

How many drum mics do you record with

Go big or go home... I'm a firm believer in using a butt-ton of mics. They may not all make it to the final mix, but I'd rather have the data and not use it then really need it and not have it. Currently for my 7-piece kit: OH's - Rode NT-5's Snare - Heil PR20 or Beta 57 Top and Sennheiser...

    good newbie setup?

Don't fear the Reaper I 2nd the Reaper recommendation. It's solid, works great, and gives you move control and functionality then you'll need...but it's nice to know that it'sthere. :D www.reaper.fm.

    Interface advice

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I have never used the AudioBox, but I am happy with the sound of it's "big brother" so to speak.

    Accurately Capturing Distorted/Chunky Guitar

I hadn't thought of recording a bit of Pantera and A/B'ing it. That's a great idea! Zakk ran DI? Wow. I would have lost that bet. Thanks man, I really appreciate it!

My guitarsist digs on pinch harmonis a lot as well. I'll check into those mics. Always like to look at toys!

    Copyright Law...???

Great link John! I've always referenced this one in the past. It's pretty basic, but helps to make sense of it all. http://cdbaby.net/dd?f=8

PreSonus AudioBox USB http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AudioBoxUSB I've never used it, but I am very happy with my PreSonus FireStudio/DigiMax rig. PreSonus had some issues for a bit, but they seem to be getting their act together. Even their tech support has been getting back to me. -Wes

    Accurately Capturing Distorted/Chunky Guitar

Could you elaborate on this? I'm pretty sure that Zakk uses Marshall and I know that Dime used Randall for years and then Krank. Are you saying that those cabs just have a natural "fwump, fwump, fwump" (Good term by the way!)

    Firepod or MOTU 8pre?

Hmmmmmm. So one would really be better off just going right to the source for pricing sake, but would probably gain from the warranty and (possible) quality control a company like Studio Projects or AKG (may) add(s) to the supply chain later? Or would you have a better suggestion of GP LDC's...

    Accurately Capturing Distorted/Chunky Guitar

Ha! Awesome link, I had actually just stumbled accross that through Gear Slutz. So rough tracks can be heard on MySpace, www.myspace.com/hyakro. I'll see if I can get some DI'd stuff pulled together for people to play with. Thanks for the tips guys! -Wes

    Firepod or MOTU 8pre?

Is the Perception a knock off? I was actually just starting to check those out, if they're cheap-o Chinese crap maybe I should go back to considering the Studio Projects that I was looking at originally. Just looking for a (mostly) budget minded general purpose (room, vocals, acoustic guitar)...

Does Reaper clean up after itself?

Different forum, but check out this thread: http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=70631&Number=677546#Post677546 FunkyBeat goes over his scheme for keeping tracks straight and cleaning directories (starting at the 3rd post). Reaper pretty much keeps everything, I...

    Motu vs. PreSonus

I don't actually know off of the top of my head. I pulled SP1 down off of the MS site, burnt it to a CD and ran it on my DAW. Then I went to SP3 using the same method (for some reason I couldn't go right from XP to XP SP3). Is there a way I check? Does it show in the updates list? I would...
