    Applying Effects on input signal???

or you could run the signal through the effects unit and record it wet, if you really wanted to.

Vocal recording tip? This is like ..."Dashboard Confessional"

I'm not a dashboard fan, either. But I do notice that his voice is quite compressed on the records. Same with the guitar and everthing else, actually. Also, he is definitely not using a 58 in the studio, and adds a little too much digital delay imo.

    Audiophile recording techniques anyone?

That makes sense, but you could do that when using only one stereo pair to record several instruments at once, right? In the case of multitracking, this wouldn't apply I don't think. Of course, you still wouldn't want to use fake reverb, though.

    Microphone trick

I don't understand the "comb filter" reference in the article. What is a comb filter and how would this achieve it?

    Audiophile recording techniques anyone?

Steely Dan are audiophiles for sure, and I know that they don't go for any EQ on the individual tracks. They do go for close micing and other standard techniques, though. Also, they hated "Royal Scam" because of some tape malfunction that I can't hear at all! I like that album a lot, in fact.

    Microphone trick

wouldn't you get phase cancellation when using this techinque? the 2:00 and the 8:00 of the speaker should be in phase with one another already right, so putting one mic out of phase would seemingly just cancel the two out.

It Craps Out When I Add FX

Okay! That is perfect. And maybe it is a buggy install. It does crash sometimes.

    VTB-1...built-in compression?

Appreciate that. :) Thankfully, my pre isn't like that. When I turn the tube up, the strenght of the signal isn't affected. What I do notice is flattening of the wave form in cool edit, as though it were clipping (well, i guess it is clipping, sort of). But the signal strength does not really...

    MXL 990...TLM 103 look-alike

As far as an OH, IMO the SP B1 is far better than the 990. I like the 990 for acoustic guitar and vocals.

It Craps Out When I Add FX

Right, but then I'll have to have the same amount of reverb, right?

    isolation vocals

If you mean recording in a sound-proofed booth separate from the band while the band plays, then I'd say maybe. Many of the best records ever were recorded live with the singer in the same room as the band. If you mean overdubbing in a totally dry booth in order to avoid any room sound, than...

It Craps Out When I Add FX

My copy of Cool Edit Pro v 2.0 craps out when I add FX to the tracks. Basically, when I add reverb to more than three tracks, the program crashes. Is the program buggy like this? I am fairly sure that this not my CPU, since my usage runs around 25% when the program is stalled. Also, I have a...

    VTB-1...built-in compression?

How much compression are we talking? Do you think you could describe the difference so that I can verify if mine is faulty, please? .... oh wait, I like the sound.

S/P DIF vs Regular on my Delta 1010

I want to ask about the merits of the S/P DIF I/O on my soundcard. I don't have any preamps that utilize S/P DIF right now, but I would like to know if it would be worthwhile to get some. How is the S/P DIF I/O different or better than simply using the "preamp->1/4" cable->external D/A...

    VTB-1...built-in compression?

yeah- that could easily be the case. mine levels out the signal noticably when the tube is up all the way, which is apparent looking at the wave form on cool edit pro. i guess the question with regards to the consistency issue is: do other people experience this? as far as my "marshall"...

    Times are changing....intresting read....

He IS talking about DAT DAT falls apart, apparently. I, however, do agree that digital recordings will last forever because they are so easy to back up on computer, etc.

    VTB-1...built-in compression?

So.... you agree that there is distortion But you don't at the same time?? Please clarify. Now clearly I was exaggerating when I said it sounds like a Marshall. Point being is that the tube distortion is there when you put it at the tube setting. I happen to like that sound, but I can...
