    Shure Beta57?

yup, the beta is hypercardiod, the 57 is cardiod. i find that the beta 58 (same as beta 57, apparently has more high end than the 58 or the 57. I hardly ever record with the beta 58 for that reason, but it is much better for live stuff.

    Pro Studio/Home Studio Hybrid

The studio is the Hive http://www.hivestudios.net/. It is truly a great studio with top-notch gear, a good room, and some of the best engineers around. Plus, at $400 (Canadian) a day including the engineer, you save a great deal of money. Our engineer was Colin Stewart, who recently engineered...

    Pro Studio/Home Studio Hybrid

We spent a day at a really great studio in Vancouver (The Hive) where we tracked instruments for 8 songs. Then headed back to my humble home studio in Victoria to track vocals and overdubs. We doubled most instrumental parts (except bass). Our style is very informed by Neil Young's Trans...

    Stoned? Get stoned with this...

Never listened to SpaceHog, actually. That's funny that you mention the drum track because I was just thinking that I should have spent a few more takes getting it perfect. Cheers!

    Mutt Lange Background Vocals

agreed-- the clip definitely sounds like it was processed with a phaser-type effect. Also, it seems like it has been doubled or tripled, giving it a chorusy sound. I don't know that it sounds overly eq-ed-- possibly some (like 5-10 dbs) low-mids were rolled off.

    Stoned? Get stoned with this...

Thank you all for your kind words :) I remixed, backing off the drums and bass about 4 db and taking some reverb off of the rhythm guitar. The vocals are up a bit now too. Sound better? --Mike

    Stoned? Get stoned with this...

Here is a track. I wrote, played the intruments and recorded it yesterday evening and this afternoon. I used a pretty nice mic (the AT 4050) as the OH and vocal mic. On drums I also used an SM57 on kick. I DI'ed the bass and clean guitar parts, and miced my Marshall JCM800 for the distorted...

    Upgrade from at3035 to 4050?

I've rented one and have been recording vocals with it for a few days now. It is OK. It has a bit of a high-end peak which I find unflattering, but in general it blows my cheapo condensers out of the water. Still, it isn't miraculous.

    SM57 Vs...

Yeah, for sure. I'm just saying that for a desert island I would maybe not choose the B1 or the 57 (although they are decent and cost-effective mics).

    SM57 Vs...

    A low-budget desert island, obviously.

    Overdubbing by yourself:

Yeah, that would definitely be more convenient, but there is still just something about having someone else wearing the engineer's hat.

    Overdubbing by yourself:

God I hate it! You've got to set everything up, hit record and then run into the other room and play the part. So damn annoying...

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

So, I set up the 4050. Sounds pretty damn good. Thanks for all the advice.

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

You got it! Just went down there actually. Where are you from on the Island? Great place to live, eh! I went with the AT 4050, in fact, and am going to use the vtb1. Just read your reply, noisedude-- it sure makes me feel good about my decision. --Mike

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

Thanks for the advice. And you are from the Island as well! I knew you were Canadian when you said give'r... lol. I love Fubar.

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

This is not the issue. I'm saying asking about a subsequent comparison of both 57 results to a U87 through a cheap pre and a high-end one.
