yup, the beta is hypercardiod, the 57 is cardiod. i find that the beta 58 (same as beta 57, apparently has more high end than the 58 or the 57. I hardly ever record with the beta 58 for that reason, but it is much better for live stuff.

agreed-- the clip definitely sounds like it was processed with a phaser-type effect. Also, it seems like it has been doubled or tripled, giving it a chorusy sound. I don't know that it sounds overly eq-ed-- possibly some (like 5-10 dbs) low-mids were rolled off.

Thank you all for your kind words :) I remixed, backing off the drums and bass about 4 db and taking some reverb off of the rhythm guitar. The vocals are up a bit now too. Sound better? --Mike

Here is a track. I wrote, played the intruments and recorded it yesterday evening and this afternoon. I used a pretty nice mic (the AT 4050) as the OH and vocal mic. On drums I also used an SM57 on kick. I DI'ed the bass and clean guitar parts, and miced my Marshall JCM800 for the distorted...

I've rented one and have been recording vocals with it for a few days now. It is OK. It has a bit of a high-end peak which I find unflattering, but in general it blows my cheapo condensers out of the water. Still, it isn't miraculous.

Yeah, for sure. I'm just saying that for a desert island I would maybe not choose the B1 or the 57 (although they are decent and cost-effective mics).

A low-budget desert island, obviously.

Yeah, that would definitely be more convenient, but there is still just something about having someone else wearing the engineer's hat.

God I hate it! You've got to set everything up, hit record and then run into the other room and play the part. So damn annoying...

This is not the issue. I'm saying asking about a subsequent comparison of both 57 results to a U87 through a cheap pre and a high-end one.
