    Pickup question

I searched the forum for information on how to check the pickup itself with a VOM. I forget the individual that provided the info in the thread I looked at, but basically what was said was a break in the coil would test as an open circuit; shorted coil would test at very low impedance and a good...

Scotch tapes: what type, how good ?

The tape could be 3M's 206 or 207. At least in my experience these were used in a "professional" setting along with the later 226 and 227. Here's a link to a listing of 3M's various tape types offered. http://www.aes.org/aeshc/docs/3mtape/aorprod2.html Hope this helps you out.

    Pickup question

I recently did some research here for pickup info. My son bought a Epiphone G310 SG and the bridge pickup lost considerable level. I found what I needed to know here on checking it to find the cause. His turns out to be a shorted pickup - very low impedance when checked. One thing I did not come...

Packing 101 (read this if you want your recorder / mixer to arrive in one piece)

All of this reminds me of an article in a vintage guitar magazine I read 10 years ago or so. The article was on proper shipping for guitars and showcased what appeared to be an excellent packing job done for a shipment that still arrived in a "destroyed" condition. The shipper: UPS. Yeah, I know...

Who the hell is using Fostek!?!?!?!!?!?!?

Other than the built in lcd the answer is as you thought. There is nothing additional for the VF to display.

FDMS-3 File Conversion To WAV From DVD-RAM

It is most definitely a format issue. You are basically being told that your computer is seeing an unformatted disc ie: no data present on the disc that it can recognize. Wish I could offer more help. Sorry.

getting the whole guitar in tune

Thanks to everyone for participating. A ton of good information! I own a 6 and a 12 string. I understand a lot of the info shared and I've learned to get the guitars sounding okay for me and with anyone else I'm playing with. I'm heavy handed when I fret so I've moved to 11s to compensate, but...

    More Ram Isn't the Solution?

I've had no luck writing to/reading from a hard drive via USB. Firewire seems to work just fine though.

    More Ram Isn't the Solution?

If I am remembering correctly more RAM will make things faster/easier since you have more "room" in "temporary storage". Processing files or executing changes to a file should be faster since more can be in RAM instead of reading from the hard drive. How do you have the Mac set up? Is it set up...

Crap 'phase' info in EQ mag Unbelievable.

It's called humility Glen and I agree with your take on it. And as was mentioned earlier, something positive came out of what could have been just a big negative not helping anyone. Kudos (or its it koalas) to you and Mr. Anderton.

Analog drift to ProTools from Tascam234! ? HELP?

Are you doing the PT jump so you don't loose anything plus being able to increase your track count? (In effect wanting to do say 16 tracks, but still have an analog quality to the recording) It would be tedious (and perhaps not really possible depending on the tracks composition), but you could...

Recording Technology: Digital, Rap/Hip-hop and the Decline of Music

Quite honestly I don't find every cd objectional. But as Beck pointed out there is something there that goes beyond the "specs"; something that happens to digital. Is it poorly designed anti-aliasing filters? I don't know. I haven't had the privilege to hear a source recorded at 24/96. Would I...

Recording Technology: Digital, Rap/Hip-hop and the Decline of Music

Going back to the film analogy: could it be in music done digitally that it is too precise? Been thinking since I posted and the thought occured to me that maybe the on/off nature of digital makes the sound overly defined (not accurately defined - or maybe - I don't know). I remember gettng a...

Recording Technology: Digital, Rap/Hip-hop and the Decline of Music

I thought this started out as an attempt to discuss how digital recording may or may not affect humans - how it affects the quality of what we are perceiving when we listen to music recorded through an all digital chain. It reminded me of a discussion I had with my son who is interested in...

Help, I don't like my voice

Many good suggestions and insights. Another approach you may want to consider down the road is getting someone else whose voice you DO like to do your lead vocals. A friend of mine that writes a lot - had a major label deal at one time - has someone else do the leads on his tunes. He feels that...

What's the best distortion pedal out there?

I would suggest finding a tube distortion pedal if there are any still made like the Tube Works or Dean Markley Overlord pedal. The newer stuff is probably good too since the technology has changed since the tube pedals were out. Something like a pocket POD might work for you. Behringer makes...

    Cleaning Out Your EARS

I would also recommend visiting the H.E.A.R. site at hearnet.com and the House Ear Institute site at hei.com. Both have resources to answer questions about hearing health especially as how it affects those of us involved in music.

Who the hell is using Fostek!?!?!?!!?!?!?

As a Mix subscriber I read a lot about what the "pros" are using for label - major and indie - projects. ProTools is always mentioned but it's mentioned alongside Audition, Logic, Cubase, Sonar et.al. along with analog. ProTools may be ubiquitous, but I think it's due to the fact that it was one...

Please help me find a power supply

There's a company named mPATHX (mPATHX.com) which is meant to replace wall warts and is rack mountable. I imagine it is rather expensive (and may be overkill for your needs), but I don't know that for sure. May be worth checking out at least.

    gettin shows

I am not sure how useful this would be to you, but check out coverbandbook.com. A friend of mine who has been playing in bands since the mid 60s wrote it. He has made his living in music since high school with at least a third of his income coming from being in a group that played regularly...
