Hi Cjacek, On the album, five songs were recorded in 1979, two in 1978, and one in 1975, unfortunately I have no idea what the original machines were in the studios used just that they were done on 1/2" multi-tracks and mixed down to 1/4" 15ips. This is what its all about for me so I will...

Hi Herm, Here is a jpeg of it. And the mixing board and lathe at FFW. The engineer told me he had not cut from a dolby tape in over 12 years! thanks, Tenyu

Hi Tim, I am mastering lacquer for vinyl pressing, the tape I'm cutting from is the actual preservation/album master. I just recorded a ballad off both dub plates onto soundforge 16 bit 48Khz .wav and converted to 256 kbps 48Khz .mp3s so you can hear for yourself the difference during the...

I brought the high quality CD master which also came from the original baked tape on the second day at FFW to reference and even though it had almost no hiss, the dynamics were extremely confined compared to the tape preservation master, a world of difference imo.

Hi HR, I've spent the past three days at Frankford Wayne in Times Square. My engineer is cutting lacquer off 15 ips 1/4" dolby A preservation LP master which came from the original baked tape. The first plate (20Khz - 20hz) I referenced at home had significant tape hiss, turns out the dolby A...

    Tape baking problem (backing)

Thanks again Tim! I spoke to an engineer the other day who told me vacuum sealing is a great idea but cost prohibitive, well I already have the Tilia Food Saver so cheap as chips to me. Now my only concern is shipping the reels via usps from New Orleans to Brooklyn. If you have any tips or...

hahaha This debate should only end with such insults. There's something not *real* about these people who care so much about digital. :shakehead: Tenyu

I actually laughed when I read this ....

Regebro speaks much about the potential of digital recording and obviously a high level of sophistication already exists with it but if we were to name our favorite songs ever how many of them would have employed digital tools??? Is it mere coincidence that music and culture in general...

I actually laughed when I read this ....

I've A/Bed many original records from 6ts and 7ts with recent digitally remastered vinyl re-issues and the difference is vast! Many vinyl pressing companies I've contacted can only cut from CD masters so all the labels just go along with it even when they have a perfectly good master tape...

    Tape baking problem (backing)

I was thinking that after dehydrating the reel it would be a good idea to vacuum seal it with my handy $129 food saver vacuum sealer to prevent moisture from afflicting the tape especially until we can get it cut to lacquer. Has anyone here tried this as an effective storage solution or know...

    Tape baking problem (backing)

Hi Tim, Thank you for the response. This is the Family Underground who never had a record released even though they were a huge part of the New Orleans scene. Not taking the blame from myself but shouldn't the engineer at the studio where the transfer was done known better than to play/record...

    Tape baking problem (backing)

Hi Anaolg Only Just a quick jack but somewhat related. I have a few 1/4" 7 half ips reels from 1979. The producers transfered them for the first time in 20 years last week and noticed considerable gunk coming off which I assume is this sticky shedding problem. I wasn't aware that baking...

    An ode for analogers

for real Every other music related site on the internet thinks tape is some ancient joke. This forum is a sound asylum! Well, thought I'd share my last two mixes that have nothing to do with tape, recorded straight to sound forge but came from vinyl. :) Part I Part II

Thanks Themaddog Excuse my late reply. I'm looking to press just vinyl from the mix downs. My friend who used to work at Motown and PIR said that the wax masters used to be cut at Sigma Sound and most other studios before being sent to the pressing plants. Well my friend doesn't believe...

Hi Analog forum: I have a friend who has unreleased material from the 60's and 70's on reel. He says these mix downs need to be mastered before they can be pressed up. I know this is a simple and stupid question but what do you use to master a tape recording via analog? Whenever you alter or...
