I need professional help ...aka "The Dead Mixer Conundrum"

You can definitely build a PSU on perf board. I have done this many times. I would personally tend to use the adjustable lm3x7 devices which are generally credited with better noise performance than the 78xx/79xx fixed regs. The 3-pin adjustables are rated to 1.5amps with suitable heat...

I need professional help ...aka "The Dead Mixer Conundrum"

What voltages and currents are required from the power supply? There are some nice PSU kits from JLM Audio which provide + and - voltage rails, and +48V phantom. Joe also does a PSU which provide 2 + and - rails (can be different) and phantom. What are your needs? Paul

    CAT 5 network advice

How frustrating! Ethernet is so common you shouldn't *have* to be so prescriptive. Should be able to say where you want the data points, where you want the patchbay and you're done. Hope you've got someone a bit sharper managing rest of your network build! Paul

Chip Quik: Easy removal of surface mounted devices There ya go! Years ago (before I knew about Chip Quik) I did some computer motherboard mods. It involved removing and replacing a 28 pin SOIC chip (something to do with voltage regulation if I recall). I got the old chip off by heating each...

Advice on Building a Computer for Recording/Production?

Pacman454: When you have made your decision regarding your CPU and motherboard, do a little research for RAM incompatibilities when choosing RAM modules. Every so often, a given motherboard will not play nicely with a given set of RAM modules - even if the motherboard manufacturer's...

Lexicon Alpha Pre-Amp Not Working in Skype

    Stupid question #1

I believe that is precisely what you are doing. Your HD24 drive will be of the older IDE type with the 40 pin ribbon cable. You'll need to either install it in your computer (if necessary, using an adapter as you linked above) or use a drive caddy. The ViPowER would be convenient if you are...

    Stupid question #1

I also saw reference to an optional Fireport (a firewire card, I take it) which is faster than the ethernet. If you use the ethernet connection, you might need to use a crossover ethernet cable or connect through a hub. However, if your computer is relatively new, the ethernet port might be...

    Stupid question #1

From a quick google, it looks like the HD24 can act as a FTP server so you can download audio files to your computer using the ethernet connection. Paul

I am undecided. You can get a matched pair of the RK-87 at less than the price of a single Peluso. Haven't so far tracked down any direct comparisons. Like you, still researching. As I mentioned earlier, I've dumped a bit of cash into discrete opamps and transformers for a couple of preamp...

Yes, the poctop pcb set is what I was looking at in the tapered version. I'm pretty certain that this will mount correctly on the internal frame in my V67G. Regarding the Peluso, I haven't looked that far into it yet. I am torn between getting 1 Peluso or a matched pair of RK-87 for under the...

    Ribbon Mic Care

It is probably good to be a bit neurotic about caring for ribbons. It is all about protecting the ribbon which is a very flimsy bit of foil, corrugated and suspended between two magnets. It is held in place under slight tension. The risk comes from stretching the ribbon. Therefore...

Excellent. I am thinking of gutting one or both of my MXL v67G to do something like that. The Peluso capsules are very tempting, but there are capsules from microphone-parts.com which are about 1/2 the price. Hmmm.

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Pure gold! Next time, disappointed dad might just need to follow up with a docked allowance and 9pm curfew. Thinking about Rugby, our local boys received a bit of a butt-whooping from the touring British and Irish Lions last night. <<grumble, mutter>> Never fun losing to the Poms! Paul

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

The fragility lies, not in the bodies which are usually very robust, but in the ribbons which are a crinkled strip of foil just a few microns thick. These ribbons are fastened in place under a slight degree of tension which strongly influences their audio response. Dropping the mic, shaking it...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Ribbon mics are fragile, no question. So you don't lend them to anyone! Modern ribbons have transformers with quite high step-up ratios, so high preamp gain is not always needed. My DIYAC RM-5 ribbons, for example, use Cinemag transformers with a 1:37 ratio.
