Hey RayneOfHavik,
Can you describe why you are not happy with the preamps on the mbox 2? There might be other solutions rather than a new preamp, depending on what your issues are.
The Jim's Audio boards use a more or less bog standard reference design from the INA217 datasheet. The layout is sufficiently generic that you can substitute other amplifiers with few or no other component changes. (The basic schematic is shown on the ebay page, and the seller emails a board...
You can get bare boards on ebay for $7.99 from here: Ultra Low Noise Low Distortion BAL Mic Amplifier PCB | eBay
These boards can be built up using variety of amplifier ICs, such as the INA217, THAT 1512 or SSM2019.
The board features an optional servo to remove DC on the output, but does not...
IMO, spend the money elsewhere and look into to room treatment if you are getting serious about recording.
The interface is unlikely to be the weak link in the audio chain.
One thing I did build in the meantime is a 4 channel JLM Baby Animal Neutral preamp.
They sound wonderful - clean and clear and smooth and quiet.
I installed these in a 2RU case. If I can get the finger out, I'll put up some photos.
Not yet built! Other projects and general family and work life invtervened. In the meantime, I revised plans and bought tranformers from Jeff Steiger (Classic Audio Products of Illinois - Classic API) which are close equivalents of the older transformers used by API. So the API-style project...
Thanks for the tip on diode availability!
I might build it too. In fact, I might use a transformer for balanced outputs - one of the $11 Edcors. Since we are clearly aiming for colour!
With some of the chatter going on about getting "vintage" sound, I did a casual search on tape saturation simulation circuits. Of course, no hardware is going to saturate exactly like tape but I found a circuit which purportedly comes close.
It looks easy and cheap to build (perhaps the...
Will you sound like a radio host? On the basis of a change of tube alone, I would say no.
More important wil be what your voice is like normally, the microphone you use, and how you use it.
If the budget does not quite stretch to John Willett's excellent suggestions, may I suggest that you also check the small diaphragm omni mics from Naiant
Naiant makes some very nice microphones, and Jon (Mr Naiant) is most helpful and informative.
To mount the mics, you'd do well to have a...
To be honest, I think you should keep things simple.
First up, you don't have 16 mics. There are techniques to get decent drum sound from 4 mics. Is there a reason you would not want to at least try that before you start spending cash that you admittedly don't have? Even now, you would need to...
Proximity effect will be exhibited by any directional microphone, whether it is a dynamic mic or condenser.
Judging by the data sheet, the SM57 rolls off lower frequencies which may to some extent counteract the proximity effect?
