well, I'm going to pour myself a scotch in a few minutes, I nailed my first "fair" :)
lol, man, I suck at this. I'm sure some of it's my equipment, but I'm also sure there's probably a mix above mine that was done on walkman headphones.
The hardest part on this was the drums and bass for...
Ya, those guys were great singers IMO, it's not about being an opera star, it's rock and roll. Well, maybe you record opera, I really don't know, but I doubt it :)
To try and stay topical, maybe you can improve your monitoring chain? It's harder to sing if you can't hear things well...
just to make the decision even harder, some entry level gear is near useless. I've got a cheap mixer (< $200) that I keep finding uses for, but looking back I would have preferred to put that money against a decent pre. The same goes for monitors. My Edirol desktops are better than computer...
I hope I didn't give you that impression, allow me to change that image lol

rip it to shreds...
Not really. I don't think the vocals sit very well regardless of the vision and the bottom end is just too big and squishy IMO. The keys and vocals are bunched up down the pipe which gives the mix a bit of an odd sound stage, especailly given the fat ass.
I more appreciated the various...
Nice, if it wasn't for a couple glaring balance issues, this would be my favourite mix. Mix is too ruled by the bottom end and the vocals aren't cutting through a lot. Drum might be panned too wide.
just for the hell of it I used...
attack 70 ms
release 220 ms
threshhold -26 db
ratio 9:1
with an rms compressor
This is without normalizing the bass track and after filtering some stuff out below 120 hz.
Probably totally inept settings. I don't really have much of a clue what I'm doing.
I wish I had the skills to answer that, I'm sure others will.
I think this will vary depending on the threshhold, ratio and whether you are using a peak or rms compressor (and how you think the track should sound of course). An rms compressor should allow for a more aggressive attack because...
updated page with pics of my humble space. Curerntly it's reverted to it's former life when it was a guest room.

Ya, this is better. Nice definition. Kick is still pretty heavy, but that is more just a preference now.
ouch, those vocals are a bit strong, especially right off of the top. I find it easy to imagine the compressor at work. I can't say for sure I actually hear it tho.
Mix came the closest...
I would have liked to gate the toms to get the ride out of them, but I haven't got that sort of voodoo going on yet.
tx xfinsterx,
chris, maybe cause the first one had the big assed bottom that glued it together a little better. It was pretty overpowering and sure to earn me a "yikes" in...

This IS my final mix.
Lot's of problems big and small, but I think I'm better off to see how this one fairs up and start fresh on the next one.
I think I"m at least starting to figure out where to start. Mixing live...
had to download the file to play it for some reasons, maybe just a blip in the net.
Refreshing top end, a little unbalanced and too stereo, but it's really nice hearing the splashes for a change (they're buried in my mixes).
Good bass. Guitars aren't sitting right for me.
