Isn't there a difference between tempo and speed? It sounds like you're changing the speed, not the tempo. Anyhow, I can't see anything wrong with changing either one.

I never think about open or closed vowels. Rhyme, scansion, assonance, alliteration, correspondences, and oppositions keep me pretty busy. But I don't write operas.
