Which cassette tape brand do you recommend?

SONY Pro cassette? I looked all over the internet to try to find this, but I had absolutely no luck. Where can I get it? Also, do you know anything about the actually tape formulation and how it compares to Maxell XLII and TDK SA-series cassettes? Thanks! Bruce

Never heard of it, ... ...but I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the heads-up! Bruce

Which cassette tape brand do you recommend?

I'm overseas (hence the name), and it's surprisingly hard to come by high quality cassette tape for my TASCAM 488mkII. I don't want to use anything but the best, but apparently I'll have to order it. Long ago, I used to use Maxel XLII exclusively, but I'd like input from othersd. Which do you...

I got my TASCAM 488 today and I have alot of questions

Happy 488-ing! Congratulations! I hope you're able to do everything you want to do. By the way, if you contact the TEAC company, they should be able to get you a manual for your 488. These days, it's pretty much the norm to be able to download them from the internet, but because the 488 is an...

I got my TASCAM 488 today and I have alot of questions

...and the 488 continues As long as your mic is plugged into a channel that has a preamp (trim), you're set. Does your machine have a trim contol on Channel 4? I don't think it does, unless it's a 488MKII. I think the original 488 only has trim on the first two channels. If this is the case...

I got my TASCAM 488 today and I have alot of questions

More 488 stuff Yes, you certainly can keep your mic plugged into one input and record on any track. I do this all the time. That's what the "Assign" switch and pan knobs will allow you to do. In record mode, "Assign" and pan tell the machine where the signal is to be routed to. Let's say you...

How do I alter the volume of separate tracks?

Thanks, but I'm not using a computer for midi Hey guys - I really do appreciate the advice. Thanks!!! I'm NOT using computer-based sequencing. As I mentioned in my initial post, I'm trying to negotiate the 16-track sequencer that's built into my keyboard (a Tecnics KN5000). It's really well...

I got my TASCAM 488 today and I have alot of questions

488 Hello! I bought a 488MKII this past summer. Is that the model you have, too? There's the 488, and there's the 488MKII. They're essentially the same in the way they operate. Fear not; they're not so tough to use, so don't despair. First, always be sure your unit is clean. The 488, that is...

How do I alter the volume of separate tracks?

Ridiculously easy midi question (except for me, apparently): I originally posted this in the "Newbie" section, but since no one responded I'll just re-post it here. How do I add volume changes to individual sequencer tracks? For example, if I want to gradually increase the volume on a string...

    Midi question

Ridiculously easy midi question (except for me, apparently): How do I add volume changes to individual sequencer tracks? For example, if I want to gradually increase the volume on a string track, or fade out another track with out affecting the other tracks, what must I do? Is this something...

hey there, I need some help.

Ahh, the MT8X! Hey, I used to have one of those! I really liked it. Is that the original model, or is it the improved version? The improved one had 3-band eq on all 8 tracks, etc. I eventually sold mine, got a Roland VS880EX, and then when I went overseas to teach, I ended up selling THAT one...

    Portastudio 488 Manual Anyone?

Manual for 488 Hello! First question: Which 488? The original, or the 488 mkII? That's important to know. They're not the same. I have the same problem, but hopefully, it'll be remedied soon. I live in Korea and purchased a slightly used 488 mkII w/o the manual. After doing some inquiring, I...

    424 vs. 488

When recording, you could always try routing a mono signal from your guitar or whatever to two tracks on the 488mkII, which would be roughly the equivalent of a single track on the 424mkIII. I've done that, and it sounds pretty darn good.

Phantom power in the 488 mkII

Thanks! That one probably should've gone in the "stupid questions" category, but I was in a hurry at the time... Bruce

    Auditioning a drum machine

The Boss DR-770 is highly recommended I used to have the DR-660, and now have the newer version. They're somewhere between $375-$425 (I think). This is an all-around great machine! It definitely sounds real. Believe it or not, I've actually had musician friends flat-out not believe me when I...

    direct recording vs. multitracking

Clarification Hello! Let me see if I understand you correctly, then possibly I can help. First, you have an X-77. Is that a 4-track? Second, you're recording all the instruments yourself. What instruments are you planning to record? By the way, what style of music is it? If you're recording...

    same old 488 baloney

Welcome to the world of the 488! Hello from South Korea! I, too, recently purchased a 488 w/o the manual, but I pretty much know how to operate mine because I've played around with these machine quite a bit. I have an mkII, but it does sound like yours is the mkI. I have used those before, but...

    I need a geek

Good advice Hey Barefoot: Thanks for the inspiring words! I'll be the first to admit that I sometimes get stuck in the past, but I can't help it if certain music really stirs my loins. I do like lots of different things, though. I totally agree that there's ALWAYs someone out there making...

    That annoying sound!

Guitar mag Whoa, thanks for the nice compliment, Shem! Actually, I'd consider your suggestion, but I'm in Korea, so I don't know how I could do that, logistically speaking. My Korean is okay but certainly not good enough to write for a Korean mag. I suppose I wrote that little blurb because...

Additional comments... Thanks, DDev & Dobro! DDev: How could I ever have forgotten to put Boston & "More Than A Feeling" on my "inspires great images/goosebumps" list?!? I think that first Boston album was one of my all-time favorite 70's releases. MTAF still does it for me. Mr. Scholz & Boston...
