    4 track-8 track cassette question

Understanding the limitations of cassette-based portastudios / multitracks can help you make some pretty impressive-sounding recordings with them. Only use high-bias Maxell, TDK, or Sony UX-Pro cassettes, 60-minutes or under. Keep the input signal hot enough to get a good solid signal to tape...

question on deleting areas of silence....

You're welcome. :D So ...did that work out for you? It seemed to me that this is what you were trying to do in the first place.

    488II channel 4

You mean TRACK 4, I assume... Try cleaning the heads. The track widths on those machines are really, really tiny, so any little bit of oxide or other foreign residue can and will wreak havoc on signals you're trying to get to the tape. Often just a quick pass with a cleaning swab and 90% +...

    volume problems

Why not just right-click on the volume of each individual track (when in multitrack view) and adjust them one at a time? I wouldn't think you'd need to lower the master volume everytime you need to bring the levels down. Besides, when you play with the levels of the individual tracks, even in...

question on deleting areas of silence....

Try this... Not sure if this is what you want, but if I want to remove all the audio, i.e., noise or other extraneous sounds in a vocal track during, say, a guitar solo, I first convert it to a stereo track (if it isn't already). Next, I click on the left channel so that the right channel is...

Tascam 488 recording drums in stereo

You are correct You're doing it right: tracks 1 and 2 panned hard left and right, respectively. That's how I always did it, too. The results should indeed be in stereo.

    688 Channel output question

You could also do the same thing on a Yamaha MT8X The Yamaha MT8X and MT8X II have the same head design as the Tascam, so if you don't want to plunk down the bucks for a 688, you could just as easily pick up a Yamaha. I know this because I used to have an MT8X, and the tapes I recorded on it...

    Porta 488mkII to CD? Possible?

I've been doing exactly this for a few weeks now - transferring stuff I made on the 488 mkII to my Sony VAIO laptop via an Edirol UA-20 24-bit interface. If you do as A Reel Person suggested, you should end up with good results. Dumping individual tracks from the 488 mkII is a different story...

is it me or is CEP that fast?

Sure does! Yep, and you can download the CD burner from the syntrillium site. It's a fast download, and it's free (beta ware, so they're not responsible if it doesn't work). I use it very often and it works like a charm. If it ever acts up, just do uninstall/reinstall.

    Welcome to My Nightmare

Sometimes simply uninstalling and then reinstalling Cool Edit Pro 2.0 will fix a problem. Have you tried this yet?

    click/pop filter

It's also useful to smooth over edit points Whenever you do cut and paste editing, there's always the chance that you'll end up with an audible "click" or "pop" where the two parts joined. Zoom in on that part, highlight it, and then click on "get click information" from the click/pop remover...

Went from a Porta-02 to a 488mkII. Please toss this drowning fool a rope...

Always keep an eye on your settings When overdubbing, be sure to listen to the already recorded tracks through the cue monitor bus. No faders should be up exept those for the tracks you're currently recording. If they are, you'll be doing the "inadvertant bouncing" that you mentioned. Turn up...

tascam 4 trach , whats with the hiss sound ??

leave the dbx on all the time Never turn it off. Never! There's no reason to, and every reason not to. See above posts for reasons not to. You also need to get as hot a signal as possible going to each track just short of distortion. Be careful ,though, as really high levels will cause the...

    advice on tascam 488

No, you cannot get separate tracks that way. Btw, what exactly are you recording (instrumentation)? You seem to want each individual instrument to have its own track, am I correct? You could record 4 tracks at once on separate tracks, and then monitor those and record another 4 tracks...

    Usb Question In Laptop World!

I have the same concerns as you. I'm over here in Korea with my Sony VAIO, and I'm preparing to go home to the States for Christmas, where the Edirol UA-20 I ordered is quietly awaiting my perusal. I will let you know how it works out.

Are Sony UX-PRO cassette's any good?

Yes... Another Bruce here telling you the same thing: Yes, Sony UX PRO is a damn good tape. If I remember correctly, they have ceramic spindles that operate soooooo quietly, unlike a lot of the squeaky Maxell tapes I've used. Of course, this isn't really an issue unless you're recording...

    Radio Shack Lmao!!!!

I don't have mine in front of me, but I'll try to remember... When you're in Song mode, you can select Realtime Record or Step Record. Choose Step Record, then hit "record." Now, there's a series of options you can get by pressing the keys that have the arrows on them. I think they are: Drum...

    Radio Shack Lmao!!!!

So... if you have several tempo changes within one song, just make a new song for each tempo change, and then chain all of these together. Hope this helps.
