    Rise... working title anyway.

I can hear this song sounding sick with a professional production job. I definitely dig the song. That being said, it's being held back by the mix. Rhythm guitars? Way less gain, MUCH more body. I don't think this is something any amount of EQ will fix. Re-track with a tone that is much...

New hard rock mix, looking for feedback!

OK, new link up. I edited it into my first post, and I'll put it right here also, just in case. http://people.ucsc.edu/~sdhawkin/NothingChanges.mp3

New hard rock mix, looking for feedback!

So I just finished another song. It's sort of a long one at six and a half minutes. I'm looking for any comments on the mix and even the song itself. guitars: Jackson DKMG -> gearbox. bass: some POS bass I have lying around -> gearbox drums: Steven Slate drums vocals: recorded through my...

This mix is killing me (I need your help!)

The drums in general sound a little thin. I suggest compressing them, especially the snare drum. Additionally I'd add some gated reverb to the snare drum as well. If you want, you can use some parallel compression on a seperate drum bus track as well. That should help the drums sit better in...

    "Highway Star"

Wow, great job, especially with the drum sound. Very '70s ish. Also a good job on the vox. Another thing I like about this mix is how it has a very warm, fat, analog sound. Great job capturing the attitude of the original song. The only criticism I can offer is that the keyboard solo has a...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Sweet, I'm reprogramming the midi track as we speak, hopefully that, and some slight tweaks on the dynamics setting on drumagog will help with the rolls. And thanks for the confidence boost haha. I guess I still haven't gotten past the phase of "OMG that's how my voice really sounds?!?!?!" I...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Yeah, thanks for the feedback. It's actually a midi track, I don't have a drummer. Then I used Steven Slate drum samples and basically went with all of the hardest hits, since I didn't feel that there were enough variations in dynamics to warrant using anything but the most percussive samples...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

whoops, I meant to say that the low shelf was at ~250, not 1.5k. I applied a 1.5k on a parametric on the master, and it definitely improved the sound. edit: OK, just uploaded a new version with the 1.5k boost, as well as a small boost at 350 just to add some body to the vocals. Let me know...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

yeah, I applied Waves AudioTrack on the master mix, and put a fairly generous low shelf starting at around 1.5k and a high shelf starting around 4k, which is responsible for the "scooped" sound that it may be exhibiting. That's my fault, i thought it sounded awesome from my headphones :-p...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Wow, well I think I made a lot of progress this time around. I removed all of my original EQ's and started from scratch. I used to frequency analyzers this time around to try and figure out where everything wanted to be in the mix. Additionally, I applied some EQ and compression to the master...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

I know it...I'm having trouble figuring out where to EQ each instrument. I'm more of a musician than an engineer, and frequencies and EQ ranges are all new to me. OK, I might have figured out my problem...too much upper-mids/lower-highs (~4k) on the rhythm guitars. I turned them down a bit...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

OK. New version. Redid the EQing on a lot of different things: guitars, bass, kick, OH's. Hopefully this mix breathes a little more, and the vocals sit on top more. Let me know what you guys think! http://people.ucsc.edu/~sdhawkin/bloodletting.mp3

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Also forgot to mention that I ran my vocals through the blockfish compressor, which helped to give them their up-front sound, even if they aren't quite "up-front" just yet in the mix. I'll post an update version in a bit. I'm re-EQing the rhythm guitars and overheads right now, trying to bring...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I got my vocal sound by using the "modern" pre-amp sim in gearbox, and then applying a tiny high shelf on the vocals, cutting out some lower mids, and then putting some 'verb on them. As far as the mix sounding dark and "cramped," what would you guys...

    Left Behind - remixed

It sounds great, but I think what it is lacking is a little stereo reverb for the snare. The snare drum has a nice sound, but because it's so focused in the middle of the stereo spectrum, it almost sounds like it's not a part of the mix, as if it's not in the same space the rest of the...

Hard rock song - looking for feedback

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted anything here, but I just finished this and was looking for some feedback. Any and all comments, criticisms, advice, etc. about the song or the mix would be especially welcomed. This is my first time using an actual DAW for recording/mixing, so I...

    bad news creature

I like the little guitar solo in the intro. The vocals sound a little bit like they are coming through a megaphone. Maybe too much upper-mids/low-highs? As far as the drums are concerned, they sound good for me. Overall it sounds good though. Great job.

New song, looking for some feedback

Thanks for the feedback! I recorded the vocals wearing headphones, so its quite probable that they don't sound just right.
