    How'd I do?

Tone, I'm not gonna be as hard on you as everyone else seems to be, but I will reiterate the fact that they've given you some good advice. Problem #1: You use pre-recorded drum loops. You need to invest in a good quality Drum VST (Steven Slate Drums) and learn how to use a midi editor so you...

Please Can I have some feedback!!

yeah the vocals are too loud relative to the beat. Right now it sounds like a demo/freestyle thing. The beat behind it sounds well-produced, if not a little derivative of everything else in this genre. But take my comments for what they are worth, I'm a metal guy myself :-p

    4 song samples for review

Well, you guys certainly sound...different... You have a heavy indie vibe, like old-school death cab or something. Or that annoying band that plays those hyundai commercials. Not really my type of music, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I'm a metal guy myself.

Where Do I Begin (Original) Acoustic Rock

Dude, this is awesome, great job. With the exception of some room noise in the vocal track, I think you did a great job, and I can't really tell that you are using any sub-par equipment. This just goes to show you the importance of knowing how to use the tools vs. having the biggest and...

Something Keeps Holding Me Rough Mix

Yeah, the vocals being bone dry is kind of ruining the sense of sonic space. Other than that it's a great mix. My only other problem is that you didn't really do a good job using autotune. I can hear it when it's clamping down on your vibrato and artificially changing your pitch. Either turn...

    Need a pre-amp reccomendation!

The Motu preamps are sterile and thin sounding. Yes they are clean. Yes they don't make any noise. What they don't do is give me a fuller, warmer sound. This is especially apparent when I am recording guitar tones. My rig is as follows: Peavey 6505+ head -> Avatar 4x12 Cab with Vintage 30...

    Need a pre-amp reccomendation!

Hey guys. I primarily play metal/rock and all genres within that spectrum. I currently have: Line 6 Toneport UX2 USB interface 2x Motu 8Pre Fire interface What I'm looking for: A 1 or 2 channel preamp (preferably 2) that will work well for both male vocals (I'm a tenor singing through a...

New mix - just got brand new headphones (Denon AH-D2000) and they are a massive upgrade over my other ones. I think this mix sounds a lot better. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?id=26275

Yup, the ringing was coming from the cymbals. I re-rendered my overhead track, redid the guitars, and redid the bass. I changed the kick to make it slightly more natural sounding. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?id=26266 Let me know if this is any better!

I hear it maybe kind of in the cymbals, but not so much in the guitar playing. It could be the amp sim software I am using. I am gonna spend Friday working my DI tracks through different sim software and presets do see if I can get something better. As for the effect chains on my guitars...

    Moar Fuk Pleez

WOW. Are these lyrics real? :-p That aside, the guitar lick isn't quite "in the pocket" with the drums. It is kind of ruining the "funk" effect. It's most apparent during the "more funk please" parts of the chorus, because the guitar doesn't stop quite in sync with the drums and bass. on a...

Merry Christmas from the Greg_L family

That's quite the musical family you have there. Congratulations for not spawning more useless, tone-deaf minions into the world ;)

hahahahaha :-D There is in fact bass, and I was actually considering lowering it in the mix because I thought it was too LOUD. I think instead what I am going to do is re-record it. I fucked up when I was recording the bass. I was using a Fender Jazz Bass and I accidentally turned the volume...

Thanks a lot for the positive feedback, I appreciate it. I agree the kick may be a bit too clicky. I should have another mix of this up on Thursday, so I'll try to fix this by then. Good ideas on the vocals. I was thinking of doing some screams, but I might see if I can get my sister to...

Ok everyone. I'm going to take the plunge here and share some of my stuff.

I'm not going to comment on this music, since it literally drives me insane. But the vocal performance seriously needs some retooling. The female is out of tune and needs some more passion in her voice. The male sounds like a tool reading a script.

Fair enough. i don't really have that many plugins, just analogflox -> compressor -> limiter on my master mix bus. But I will try it without the analogflux to see if it sounds better. What I DO like about it is how it neatly glues the low end of my mix together. As for the toms, do you think...

You may be hearing something like that from the Voxengo analogflux tapebus plugin i put on the master mix bus. Its set up to simulate tape compression, so maybe it is creating some overtones there. I agree with you about the toms, but unfortunately, I've just never been good at mixing toms...

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, it may be a little hot in the upper mids. I have a slight boost going on at around 1.5k, do you think I should take that off? As for the drums, is it the programming? Or do I just need to humanize the hits more? Thanks again for listening.

    Yet Another Heavy Metal Mix

I'm not a huge fan of the guitar tone, it sounds digital and scooped and is sucking power out of the mix, at least for me. Other than that it sounds good.

Does this lead guitar part sound at all realistic?

It's actually not that bad sounding, it could pass, but it's definitely too loud in the mix. Turning it down will definitely help.
