Help SilentJ get on Austin City Limits

Hey guys...SilentJ (my band) has entered the contest that Dell is sponsoring to get on Austin City Limits. I just entered us today using one of the songs y'all have helped me to mix and master, so I thought I'd toss this out there. If you have a moment between now an Aug 22, we'd really...

    Three Songs to Comment On

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree I think Words in a Letter has some nice production quality. I think I succeeded with that one. On Life Chosen/Bullet...we really love the little Baltimore New intro. I know some may find it cheesy (I do to a certain point) but I think it adds to the song...

    Redwater--a rock n' roll band:

LOL. Oh the number of times my neighbors have driven by and seen 3 or 4 of us sitting in my car, listening to music. Yeah, all the time. I think the car is a great test bed. We listen loud. We listen soft. Try to get an idea of how it all sounds from different levels. We also have tested by...

    New Song

Trippy. The overall volumes of the mix are nice, but powerful. The tremelo bit is cool, but really smacks you in the back of the head when it comes. I think each entry point of each instrument does that. With headphones on, each instrument really smacks you in the side of the head. It's a bit...

Another 80's rocker - too high to fly

Like it a lot. The structure, orchestration and vocals are very nice. My only criticism is on the overall EQ of the song, and I am only being so bold as to say this because I have the same issue, and would love to hear from others on how they get past it...the overall mix sounds tinny to me. It...

journey's end - my new ballad

Great vocals. Nice tune overall. I think the mix has a tinny sound overall. Maybe kick the bass freq.'s up a bit? Dare I suggest trying the dreaded smiley EQ?

Listening to Good and Bad now... I like the edginess of it. I think the bass is a bit overblown, just a touch. And I like the vocals, but maybe with a bit less reverb?

    What do you guys think?

I like the "brownish" kind of color that it has. Very pro sounding, but with that sort of garage sound. Definately need to lift the second (left) guitar up a bit. Another poster mentioned this, and I experience the same thing. Vocals are pushed to the right a bit, probably because of the...

    Opinions on a song/mix please

Very nice mix. I'd love to hear how you went about recording each piece. I am envious of your final results.

    Three Songs to Comment On

Hey all...seems like I've been mixing, learning, remixing, learning more, remixing for months now. I now have three songs close to done, whatever that means. I'd like to go much further with these, but I think my skill is limited, and I need to stop messing with them, unless someone has some...

    recording live rehearsals

I am on a limited budget so this may not be the best answer, but this solution works for me. When we rehearse, I have the kick mic'ed, and each amp mic'ed. We run all of this through our PA mixer. When I want to record a rehearsal, I just take a monitor mix out to the mac, and record a track in...

Ok....some questions about recording (mic placement, sound, EQ)

When I've recorded acoustics for our band, we used our acoustic/electrics. I mic'ed the guitar using an SM57 knock off (all I had to work with). I stationed the mic in front of the sound whole pointed at the 12th. I got a lot of percussive over tones (as another poster mentioned). In the future...

Ok....some questions about recording (mic placement, sound, EQ)

As the owner of nothing but low budget mics, I'd suggest at a minimum you buy a plosion filter and use it!!! $15 well spent, and even a basic, junk mic will sound better with a plosion filter vs. no filter.

SilentJ's Biggest Show of the Year - Friday Aug 8, 2008

Hey guys...I dunno if this is OK in this forum or not, seems OK. If not, my apologies. I love this forum, and don't want to be labeled a SPAMer. Unfortunately, and despite all of your help our CD won't be done by next week. We're close on the CD, but its not quite ready. I need to do a bit more...

    Post Master Clipping ARGH!!!

I thought the slider at the bottom, and the master track volume line were the same thing? No?

    Post Master Clipping ARGH!!!

Thanks, I'll have to give that a try. I believe I already mixed down to an AIF with no compression, but maybe I didn't. Damn...why'd I leave the Mac at the studio last night? Grr.

    Post Master Clipping ARGH!!!

It was not my intent to say I want to keep the "clip lights at full bore". I don't want to do that at all. I guess I didn't explain well. When I am in the GB, and mixing the tracks...I can crank things up so I am not clipping and it sounds great. Then when I dump the mixed tracks to a stereo...

    Post Master Clipping ARGH!!!

Thanks for the input. I am a noob, so please bear with me when I equate to dumping my mix into an MP3 as mastering. I will look into other software for creating the final mix.
