If you HAD to use one dynamic mic for everything...

Easy. Sennheiser MD 441. I have many of the high end dynamics and if I had to limit myself to 1, it would be the 441 in a new york minute.

Man. I miss the sound of a needle on a record....

AND I miss the fact that you could de-seed a whole ounce of pot with an album. Try THAT with a CD!

    What am I doing wrong?!

That track has 2 elements you probably don't have. 1. The reverb/delay is very deep. I bet you can get this sound with a lexicon pcm 70 (or 80). I have both and they can do it easily. I use these types of settings quite alot. The cheaper reverb/delay boxes (plug-ins) don't even come close to...

The use of Sonic Maximizer ?????

These things are really popular right now with the Nickelodean/Disney productions. The maximizer is all over these recordings along with autotune. I can't stand either anymore as they are so overused. However, I am stuck as my kids love the music and I am stuck with 1 TV.

Ribbon mic distortion - One octave below source audio.

Try it with a shock-mount (if you have one). It could be the mic stand/floor resonence acting on the mic body.

    Making Recorded Songs Sound "Fuller"

You hit the nail on the head. Without getting into a pissing contest from anyone, I upgraded from many well known digital recorders to a RADAR unit. I also upgraded to all Lexicon PCM 60, 70, 80, 90 as well as a bunch of very good parametric eqs, mic pres, new studio monitors etc. I spent a year...

    Best Channel Strip???

You have to try them out. I have everything from Focusrite Platinum Pro to Avalon, UA 610 AND the portico. For MY vocals on the album I am doing right now. the Focusrite Platinum Pro is the only one that sounds spectacular. I use a TLM 103 to the Focusrite through an Ashly PEQ26 through a Urei...

Worst commercial mix you've ever heard? MIX CRIMES

Here , Here. You have it right on the money. Good digital stuff sounds great. I run a RADAR system now that sounds just like my 2" MCI minus any tape hiss.

What is your default vocal effect chain? EQ/Compressor/Reverb.. ?

I use a Neuman U87 to an Avalon M5 pre straight to the IZ RADAR with a Symetrix noise gate and some compression depending on if I actually know how I am going to mix it. If not, no compression. This works great for my vocals. For others I have many mics to try.

    Effects of Over-EQing

I really don't understand that comment at all. Fixing it is fixing it whether you boost or cut.

I need a new vocal mic

I second the U87. I could live with only this mic if I had to. That is why they are a studio staple and have been for a long time.

    Muddy Multiple Keyboards

You have the #1 symptom of bad monitoring acoustics. Amongst other problems the standing waves of the bass are probably killing you the most. Try moving your monitors away from any walls first. In a properlt treated room, the "beef" as you say will increase. You are EQing out what the room is...

    High end

According to some total idiots who rate digital converters, there is some magical tone that resides in the bigigahertz range that only tape recorders can record. Digital rigs stop at 22kHz and cannot reproduce the "depth", "imaging" and "tone". That is why analog recording is best, it appears.

    Muttley, Advice if You Please

    1. Fix the nut with a new one. 2. Not much can be done with the fretboard without a ton of work. IE: remove the poly finish and re-do with actual laquer, You really can't leave a maple fretboard unfinished. 3. I am not Muttley.

    Dual Purpose Hi End Compressor

I think the Joe Meek FourQ would be a better choice. Properly annunciated: J-o-e-M-e-e-k-F-o-u-r-Q Say it real slow.
